Due to many fans not reading our rules carefully, we will provide a list of popularly requested vocalists that will not be analyzed because analyzing them would break our rules. Please read our rules before making a request.

Rules

For analyses of members of idol groups, we only analyze vocalists. We do not analyze rappers, even if they may sing at times if their main instrument is rapping, we will not analyze them as it is not fair to them. If a rapper happens to have significant vocal skill then they shall be considered for an analysis.

We only analyze up to half of the vocalists in a group, and only the strongest half. If a group has 8 members but 4 are rappers, then we’ll only analyze up to half of the vocalists in that group. So in this case only up to 2/4 vocalists will be analyzed. If the vocalists in a group happen to be more vocally skilled and balanced, then more vocalists will be analyzed within a group, such as the case with SHINee, Brown Eyed Girls and Mamamoo.

We only analyze vocalists with sufficient material for an analysis. Therefore groups that debuted more recently, such as in 2016 and 2017, will not be analyzed due to the lack of material. We prioritize vocalists who have longer careers with more material for an analysis.

*******WE ARE NO LONGER TAKING REQUESTS ******* because the list of vocalist to be analyzed has reached a fairly lengthy size, we will be no longer accepting requests until the list decreases in size.

Disbanded groups or members who left their groups and are now not active anymore in the mainstream will NOT be analyzed. Even if they may be active, they’d need to be significantly vocally skilled to be considered for an analysis. If they’re active outside of Korea/K-pop, they’re not K-Contemporary artists anymore, therefore will NOT be analyzed.

With trendy TV shows like Idol School and Produce 101, we must inform you we will NOT analyze temporary groups as there will not be enough material within their one year together to write a full analysis for their main/lead vocalists. These vocalists shall be analyzed once they re-debut under a solo stage name or under another group in the future, following the guidelines provided above regarding material, positions and relevancy within their groups.

If any of you would like your idol to be analyzed, drop your request in the comment box. If you attach videos/recordings of their (preferably) latest live performances, it will be helpful. But then again, it will not guarantee that your idol will be analyzed since it will depend on our contributors. We can’t even guarantee when we will release the analysis of the above mentioned future projects. One other reason is that analyzing vocal when there isn’t enough material to judge them will be challenging and more or less inaccurate. This will explain why judging rookie idols is an issue.

    1. Not the admin but I can kinda help you with your question. All of DC’s vocalists have problems with nasality, I think. I don’t think Siyeon has shown any support in her voice yet (I think I heard her straining/having serious throat tension with an F#4 before, in her Speechless cover probably). Apparently, Yoohyeon is the only member that can kinda support her voice (albeit pretty shallow) up to A4 (that was in her Love Scenario cover).

    1. Hi dear. It is not a question of whether we are running this page or not. We just have not had time, and thus we don’t answer generic questions that don’t really seem to have a specific intent. Like we do answer specific questions with time stamps about singing, but general thoughts ones aren’t answered anymore. Also this video is blocked for me in Korea so I can’t watch it anyway. ㅠ

  5. What do you think about the classical community saying that placement does not exist? They also have pointed out that SoHyang has a lot of constrictions and Lara has non-existing chest voice and woofy, hollow upper belts. What do you think of these statements?

    1. I don’t think of these statements. First of all I don’t have a strong opinion on Lara Fabian, I don’t follow her, have never analyzed her and only listened to a handful clips of her singing. The rest of the statements? Whoever said them and would like to have a discussion about such statements with me can come here and do it. I’m not about to play “this little birdy told me” here baby. It’s just not how I do things. I don’t know who “this classical community” is for starters, since this sounds like one or two people being bundled up into the opinions of a whole community.

  7. Hello Ahmin, I don’t know if this qualifies as a question you would answer to but I am gonna ask.
    Since you have been(still are?) a vocal teacher how long does it take for a person to develop Support/Resonance if they did not have it before?
    Is there any age limit to develop it? I am in my late 20’s and I have had a predominantly airy/breathy vocals, is it still possible?
    A Silly Question: Are the people trained in Opera the ones that have the best support and resonance?

    1. Hi baby. Unfortunately there’s no timeline because it depends on many factors. How long you practice, how much you do it, how much you physically understand what you’re supposed to do vocally with your cords and how well you apply it. I wouldn’t say there’s an age limit at all though! No the opera people aren’t necessarily the best, they could still lack in some areas but they’re on average better trained Id say because their training is more strict.

    If time is available, could you please analyse HAN from Stray Kids (A new boy group from JYP)? He is known as an all-rounded idol taking responsibilities as a vocalist in many songs. If your rule is the better half in a group being analysed, he definitely shouldn’t be missed (In fact, he may be one of the best ones in his group as I am shocked by him in mr removed videos).       3. Oh see that’s something I dislike quite a bit. The whole “Korea’s whatever” thing. Ailee was called Korea’s Beyoncé because she sang Halo well, Sohyang was Korea’s Mariah Carey because she sang Emotions. They are their own people, their own singers, artists and vocalists. Their vocal technique, styles and music are so different. Sohyang and Mariah Carey are so different vocally and stylistically, so are Jessi and Mary J. Blige. It’s not fair to both of them to call Jessi Korea’s Mary J. Blige. She’s not, she’s Jessi. You know what I mean? You can’t compare.

    1. I read comments that you categorised weak vocalist(such as NU’EST minhyun) as vocalist who can’t support something like that so can these weak vocalists improve their support or singing(I’m idk the right terms I know nothing about vocal or singing)
    2. Does vocalist who use too much airy/breathy style/technique classified as bad vocalists?
    3. Does straining could ruin one vocal chords?
    Last question is does NU’EST baekho strain too much in their songs and is he classified as good vocalist like good enough to be vocal teacher/director?

      1. Yes yes of course they can. That’s why it’s technique that we talk about in this blog. Because it’s something that can be worked on and improved on, always. It can always get better.
      2. Not necessarily. If they do it on purpose and can turn it on and off at will there’s no problem at all. If it’s a habit they can’t fix and can’t choose at will, then it’s a bad habit that affects their overall singing and vocal cord development.
      3. Yes, it definitely can.
      4(?). I am not familiar with Baekho’s knowledge of singing technique. He’s a tenor who strains above G4. We have his analysis here actually, the information you need to know if he’s good or not is there. Is he good enough to be a vocal teacher? That depends on his knowledge of singing and teaching, not only his practical use of proper technique.

  11. Hey ahmin! Please tell me this web is still alive T,T So I’ve been making comparison between female kpop idol who tried to cover Speechless from Aladdin. And a lot of people has been recommending me to hear Siyeon’s version. But when I watched her live performance, something bothered me. I’m not a vocal skill master, but I think she couldn’t reach that “Hear the echoes saying I won’t be silenced” part or am I just not as trained as any basic vocal coach.

      2. Oh I see what you mean. I watched most covers of this song because I love this song and I can tell that not many sopranos can sing C#5’d or above without straining actually. So for her, who hasn’t shown resonance nor support in the fifth octave, it would only make sense that she’d end squeezing her throat, raising her larynx and straining the note.

        I found that Siyeon did the same mistake as I do every time I tried to sing this song. It’s just so frustrating if the reason is that I also can’t sing a single note in the 5th octave properly T,T Kinda sucks when you love singing but your vocal ability cant support it.     I have (quite) a few questions about Haseul from LOONA.

    I’ve seen some really weird claims, pretty much from uneducated people on vocals – but still – about how she wasn’t facing any “technical” issues when it came down to vocal, and had “by far” the best technique out of the girls. I appreciate her voice, but when I listen to it, I can hear what sounds *to me* like quite a few “technical flaws”, and I was hoping you could help me learn more by correcting me, please!

    1) Here’s a bit from ‘Quando m’en vo’.

    Please correct me, but this is sung entirely in headvoice? (Not too sure about the ending there, I guess there could be a switch to a very high larynx super heady mix, but I don’t think so?)

    To me, it sounds like the vocal chords are connecting, yes, but not fully? She starts pretty well I think, but it becomes a little uneven, for a lack of better word, around the @0:10 mark. In general, it feels a little tight too, so I reckon there must be some placement issues, no?

    She goes for a relatively high headvoice note around the @0:26-ish mark. Not too good with my ears, I think it’s a C6 and she kind of “”riffs”” down between A5 and G5. It’s not unpleasant to my ears, and there’s obviously some connection there, but it still sound kind of shrill and a little tight, or is that just my untrained ears?

    It also sounds like she really drops her support almost entirely after that? The end of the clip just seems a little wobbly to me (could it be because she’s descending into the fourth octave, still in headvoice?)

    Again, I hear a similar thing where…it’s obvious there’s a sense of connexion between the vocal chords as the headvoice doesn’t sound “broken down” and she’s connecting outside of the typical “oo” vowel we usually hear when Idols sing in headvoices, but there’s also an airiness to it somehow, I feel like? I know, for example, that a little bit of air between the vocal chords will stop them from fully connecting, right? But I’m not entirely convinced it’s a stylistic approach/choice from her. In fact, it almost sounds like she’s not managing her airflow correctly to me? Am I wrong in thinking that?

    From @0:56ish to 1:00, that’s where she jumps into the fifth octave. Again, doesn’t sound unpleasant at all to me, but it seems just a little tight again? Am I wrong to think there’s some flawed placement issues?

    From @1:00 to 1:03-ish, she drops down again. Shallow support there. I can’t tell if it’s just her “giving up” because it’s the end of the bit she wanted to sing, but to me it sounds like she’s mostly out of air (probably because she didn’t manage it correctly)?

    @1:33 > belted high note in her mixed register. I think she kind of briefly hits E5, but the sustained note is mostly a D5? This too me sounds like a high larynx, relatively heady mixed note. Am I wrong? Soft palette is definitely not raised enough, so the throat’s probably tight too. She’s definitely pushing here. Am I right in thinking that you can push without straining? Like… She’s kind of pushing the note out of her throat here, but her mix is very heady and she isn’t pushing hard enough for me to blatantly hear proper straining?

    @1:56 > Not sure if we can call that a “run”, but either way, as it is, it sounds a bit flat-ish to me, no?

    @2:09 > Again, not good with the notes. To me, it seems like the sustained one is a D5 mostly. Just like the first one, sounds pushed, tight, etc. Same issues as mentionned above, I think?

    @0:00 – 0:10-ish > sounds tight and shrill to me? Is her pitch alright here? It sounds weird to me. Could you maybe help me understand why I feel that way?

    @0:14 and 0:16 > that sounded really weak to me? Again, super tight and constricted, I think?

    @0:17 to 0:20 > Vibrato seems a little shaky to me, a little uneven maybe? Or maybe it’s just her shallow support?

    If you listen to the clip entirely (it’s rather short), I – again – get the sense that there’s just a very bad air flow/management? I can’t explain it very well, sorry, but in the end in particular, around @0:36 ish to the end, it sounds like there’s a lot of unintentional breaks, because of what I mentioned above?

    1. A chesty mix may become difficult to handle without pushing as you get higher, as the weight becomes too much for the upper notes. There’s not one easy answer to your first question, you need to develop your breath control and airflow consistency, the vocal cords, the way you place your voice and keep working on your muscles one semitone at a time with patience.

      1. Shallow singing is singing that’s not properly supported but not necessarily strained either. There’s a lack of proper muscle development, lack of proper flow and thus lack of support.

      2. I had to look up exactly where those muscles where. lol Do you feel your throat tight and tense as well? Because it’s not something I can say I’ve noticed feeling, those muscles getting firm. It seems to me to be a sign of tension.

  21. Hii ahmin, can you help me debunk something.

    I’ve been arguing a lot with people about the fact that Haseul from LOONA isn’t in fact “belting” in their b-side ‘Oh (Yes I Am). I think a lot of people hear something “””relatively high” happen during the climax of the song and assume it’s a belt, but in this case it isn’t.

    I’ve been trying to explain to them that this is just her mixing REALLY brightly, with lots of air, and a very heady placement, and high larynx. But they insist she’s belting the note here. To me, there’s too much airflow for it to even be possible.

    1. Hi baby. See, that really depends on your definition of belting. A lot of people use belting and mixing as interchangeable terms, in this case specifically it’s a C#5 sung at an arguable climax of the song. It’s totally understandable that people would call it belting. I’m not entirely sure what your definition of belting is because you said it’s really bright and high larynx and there’s too much airflow..but all of these things could be present in a belted note. Belting is not necessarily good singing. It’s a C#5, it’s mixed and she’s attempting to make it a powerful note. It isn’t quite powerful. You’re right, the larynx is high, the throat is closed, the vowel is tight, there’s a lot of pushing of air and it is quite heady..or at least probably more heady than she would have wanted for a climax note. My personal understanding of belting is simply chest-dominant mixed voice. Now, would I not call this not a belt? You could and I wouldn’t really mind if you did personally.

Hello Ahmin, I love having a read of your analysis and would like if you could analyse these clips of IZ*ONE’s main vocal Jo Yuri who was the youngest contestant to ever make it to the 3rd round in the King of Masked Singer. Whenever you have time, if you could have a look at the following clips that would be great 🙂

    I have also attached a studio recording in which she and two of IZ*ONE’s lead vocals sing a ballad. I am aware that a studio recording is probably not the best indicator of technique but I would appreciate if you could assess how they all do. Cheers.

    Finally, I was wondering if you had any tips on developing a lighter mix? I am a Baritone with a non-falsetto range of D2-G4 and cannot seem to navigate the area from E4-G4 without pulling a lot of chest. I am unsure if you ever provide feedback to people like this and I completely understand if you do not. Thanks for your time.

  25. Ahmin or anyone else in the team, would like to ask what’s the difference between vibrato and natural vibrato? Does one have benefits that the other doesn’t? Ahmin been checking out your stuff on YT and it’s so good.

    1. Hi bby. I’m confused, vibrato is an oscillation of pitch. It can be done with a natural vibrato or a number of forced ones. You’re making it seem like vibrato and natural vibrato are two separate things, so I’m confused.

      2. Sorry I just didn’t think that the comment was on the to be approved moderation list so I didn’t approve it. But it’s there. I’m so sorry baby, but I have made it a point for a while that I will not answer any video questions that aren’t specific enough so a question that’s asking for a general analysis of a singer in a video…a general analysis could be “it was good” to what I usually do, which is writing a paragraph or so. But that requires listening, stopping, going back, writing, listening again. I am explaining this to you to show you that even though it’s a 3 minute clip or 4 minute clip, when I have to get down to “analyzing” this video..it could take me 10 to 15 maybe 20 minutes to go over just one video. Which is why I have stopped doing it as I simply don’t have the time.

        I could answer your second question. Have you seen our youtube videos? Well the ones posted on the blog? There’s one about mixed voice, high notes and one about supporting. #8 is the support one, and that one should give you a good set of exercises that can help you develop a lighter and brighter mix. It’s easier to hear it and see it than for me to write down an answer that could be interpreted in different ways because this is writing only. I actually would rather provide you, an actual individual with a question about himself, with help than listening to a K-pop singer’s whole video and analyzing it. I feel I am able to achieve more by helping you than by doing a general analysis of a video.

        I hope I don’t sound angry I’m really not lol I’m just trying to explain that it’s okay to ask these kinds of things. You have a very nice extensive range actually, G4 is not a low note for a baritone. Try watching the video and let me know if you have any questions!

I guess my less general question would be what extent of support is present in the clips that I sent, I understand that a proper analysis would take a significant amount of time so just some insight into the level of support and the suspected supported range that the vocalists (primarily Yuri) have would be great 🙂 Don’t worry you didnt come across as rude at all and I definitely understand your standpoint.       4. See baby, that’s still a problem. When I say a specific question, I generally mean about a specific note or a specific part of the song. Usually with a time stamp is more of what I meant. For me to kind of look for the supported range, I’d have to go over the whole video and since I don’t have perfect pitch exactly I have to look for the notes and go back oftentimes. I would not go into a suspected supported range for her, I don’t think it’s a smart thing to do. This is two live videos and that’s not nearly enough to come up with a supported range. I can tell you from listening to her, she supports. She could have a deeper more developed diaphragmatic system to support better. She can be a bit shallow, especially on sustained notes. I’m hearing strain on D5 in the Brown Eyed Soul song but I’m hearing support in the phrased notes up to C5. Though the sustained C5 after the D5 “yeah!!” that part, I won’t look for the time stamp now but she was shaky on support then. Wasn’t managing her breath well. In the end I am doing what you’re actually asking me to do, please in the future don’t ask for me to give a general analysis. For a couple of reasons, because if I do it for you then I should do it for everyone else, right? Also I feel unsatisfied by just listening and giving such generic points without time stamps. I like to be more thorough and not being thorough bothers me. I’m listening to 장마 by Jungin, and I’d say her C#5’s are on the strained area of the spectrum. She is carrying some degree of support, but pushing quite a bit. There’s too much air when she sings, her vocal cords don’t fully connect to sing higher above B4 and she becomes shallow. She has decent support and she does not at any point produce a resonant round sound. The sound lacks fullness overall, it’s got brightness and support and she isn’t nasal but it lacks depth in support, openness and more development of her vocal cords.

        I am a complete beginner (baritone as I mentioned earlier) and would like to know what steps to take in order to improve my singing. Don’t mind the poor phrasing at some points haha I haven’t listened to the song in a while so was kinda just following the rhythm as I heard it. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

    Been dying to hear your opinion on Fromis9 Jiwon’s vocals. She was said to be a power vocalist when she was still competing for a spot in Twice. Her vocal colors I truly like but what do you think about her actual skills as a vocalist? She seems to be able to sing Ariana Grande songs without much difficulty:

    1. Baby, I was never not active. I’ve been active, I just have been scarcely responding to comments because as I’ve made it clear, I will not answer generic questions. I will sort of answer your question by saying singing Ariana Grande songs without difficulty is not a good standard for singing because it’s not like Ariana Grande sings her own songs without difficulty. Being able to hit the notes and hitting them with proper supporting is two different things. Just because a soprano has a developed range in their mixed voice and can strain relatively well up to G#5 on any day like Ariana does not mean she is supporting any of the notes she is singing. So the standard you set up is not very realistic. I am so sorry baby, but as a generic question I will not watch the video. I simply do not have the time. I would rather spend time watching full videos if it’s to write a full analysis and I haven’t even done that lately, so…I’m so sorry but I won’t break my own personal rules for this. I will listen to a bit of the video and give you a generic answer which I hate doing. She supports, I heard supported B4’s in If I Ain’t Got You, but the D5’s and E5’s I heard were strained. I don’t know if she supports C5 or C#5, and I didn’t hear resonance. The video spent a lot of time going over notes around D5 and higher which were all strained. Again which is why I’d rather do a full analysis where I can hear a vocalist singing more than just high notes and hearing how they actually breathe, mix, support, use dynamics, use their lower range and head voice. I’m so sorry if I’m being rude or if I sound like I’m lecturing you..I really don’t mean to but I have been active. I just have stopped answering questions like this for all these reasons and I just hope it can be clear as to why I didn’t even answer this question before (which I noticed you copy-pasted from your previous comment). It wasn’t anything personal against you or Jiwon, it’s to do with questions like this in general. I simply don’t have the time.

    1. No no baby, you’re asking a specific question with a time stamp. THAT I can answer. Yes, it’s a strained flat F5 although she wasn’t flat right after when she sustained it. The run was really messy, the notes were scattered, mushed together, there was no clarity of pitch, of separation, of a rhythmic structure. It was just throwing out notes.

      4. @Moon i know he always have been a good vocalist but rather than Hyunwoo , koreans have always praised kim bumsoo and mc the max lee soo for them the top4 are park hyoshin , Naul , bumsoo and lee Soo there’s a lot of Korean videos with those 4 . hyunwoo only got massive response after his mask king era .
        i meant it hard cause there’s no support above Bb4/B4 even some B4s are questionable, he does have a developed low range and some nice head voice moments . i can give you his supported range here but i would rather you wait for his analyze that would be way more instructive to you rather than just knowing how high and how low he can support, there’s many other factors that are way more important

    1. It’s very questionable. Thank you for the specific question by the way. See the second C5 on aye as a vowel was definitely closed, but the first one as far as stretch goes and vowel shape was okay. Not too closed, not too pushed. It was still not open, it had obvious throat tension and it was quite closed. On the other hand, his mixing in itself was done quite well. I wouldn’t call it supported, but I’ve heard much worse.
