Rules
For analyses of members of idol groups, we only analyze vocalists. We do not analyze rappers, even if they may sing at times if their main instrument is rapping, we will not analyze them as it is not fair to them. If a rapper happens to have significant vocal skill then they shall be considered for an analysis.
We only analyze up to half of the vocalists in a group, and only the strongest half. If a group has 8 members but 4 are rappers, then we’ll only analyze up to half of the vocalists in that group. So in this case only up to 2/4 vocalists will be analyzed. If the vocalists in a group happen to be more vocally skilled and balanced, then more vocalists will be analyzed within a group, such as the case with SHINee, Brown Eyed Girls and Mamamoo.
We only analyze vocalists with sufficient material for an analysis. Therefore groups that debuted more recently, such as in 2016 and 2017, will not be analyzed due to the lack of material. We prioritize vocalists who have longer careers with more material for an analysis.
*******WE ARE NO LONGER TAKING REQUESTS ******* because the list of vocalist to be analyzed has reached a fairly lengthy size, we will be no longer accepting requests until the list decreases in size.
Disbanded groups or members who left their groups and are now not active anymore in the mainstream will NOT be analyzed. Even if they may be active, they’d need to be significantly vocally skilled to be considered for an analysis. If they’re active outside of Korea/K-pop, they’re not K-Contemporary artists anymore, therefore will NOT be analyzed.
With trendy TV shows like Idol School and Produce 101, we must inform you we will NOT analyze temporary groups as there will not be enough material within their one year together to write a full analysis for their main/lead vocalists. These vocalists shall be analyzed once they re-debut under a solo stage name or under another group in the future, following the guidelines provided above regarding material, positions and relevancy within their groups.

If any of you would like your idol to be analyzed, drop your request in the comment box. If you attach videos/recordings of their (preferably) latest live performances, it will be helpful. But then again, it will not guarantee that your idol will be analyzed since it will depend on our contributors. We can’t even guarantee when we will release the analysis of the above mentioned future projects. One other reason is that analyzing vocal when there isn’t enough material to judge them will be challenging and more or less inaccurate. This will explain why judging rookie idols is an issue.

Does this means he has yet to project and train his vocals well for musical acting or was it his bad habits in general when he goes high in notes? Thank you for answering btw
LikeLike
It’s both. He has yet to train to sing with a more proper approach for musicals but his general approach is also something that’s blocking his path to singing with openness, resonance and support up there.

Was she supporting? Because she sounded like she did. And how about the first verse? Personally, I don’t find it too low but I’m just curious what the notes are because it feels like she dropped her support there.

Chuu generally supports, that’s something I have felt a few times. 0:28 Eb3, before that G#3. She drops her support a lot in the third octave and has no developed chest voice. Her mix has some drops in support as well, flatness at 0:55 and she just isn’t lifting her soft palate enough. But she is actually connecting better in the chorus. She has support, to an extent. Thank you for being more specific by the way!

Correct me if I’m wrong. And that note at 0:12 and 0:18, are those the same?

It’s pretty shallow, yes. Yes those two notes are the same note on the same vowel and consonant. G#4.

I haven’t been answering questions that are more or less kind of generic. Like a general opinion of a vocalist, I am going to be honest with you and tell you I have been purposely not answering those questions because they’re time consuming and I’d rather just analyze a vocalist instead. Also unfortunately even if I wanted, I can’t watch cause these videos are blocked for me. Why don’t you tell me what you think of her when you ask about her and make it a more specific question in the future?
LikeLike
But Jo Yuri of IZOne is one of their main vocalist. I think her voice is clear and not nasal and produces vibrato. Also when she hits the high notes the veins in her neck doesn’t pop out like other vocalist. That’s I was wondering about her technique.
LikeLike
Veins popping out aren’t the only way to tell anything about vocal strain. It’s actually very unreliable if you base it off of the way things look alone without listening to the quality of sound. But at least I see why you’d ask about her. Then please if you ask a question, show me these instances without nasality, with a vibrato, with high notes where you feel she’s not straining and where she’s singing with clarity, while also adding time stamps.
LikeLike
So this is also about Yuri but I understand if you can’t answer.
This is a weird ranking video but what interests me are the parts she sings between 5:22 to 6:07
In the first clip, from 5:22-5:35 her voice sounds pretty clear to me, sounds relaxed.
Between 5:39-5:42 she sings a higher not that I’m pretty sure is not fully supported.
Then, @5:47-5:53 and 5:55-5:59 she does a crescendo (I think) into those high notes that I don’t think are strained but sound kinda pushed.
Lasly, her high note @6:00-6:05
LikeLike
5:22 The first note is not relaxed. It’s clear, it’s got chesty placement and her soft palate is lifted. But her throat is also constricted, there’s clear pushing of air pressure and throat tension. The D5 is strained. 5:25 I’d even say the larynx is high on the C5. I think she shows a LOT of potential, she just needs to manage air pressure and throat tension because she’s really close. 5:39 It’s not “not fully supported”, it’s completely strained. High larynx, pushed, squeezed F#5 followed by Eb5. 5:47 ~ 5:53 The C5 before the F5 was better than the other one from earlier. She sort of reminds me of a more constricted Seunghee. 5:55 I think you’re confusing crescendo (increasing of volume on a softer part gradually) vs a run (a sequence of notes sung on vowels without consonants, usually one single vowel). Eb5’s and F5’s were the notes she was hitting and these are, as you know, very hard notes for a soprano to hit well. They were quite squeezed and strained. 6:00 ~ 6:05 F#5, E5 and then C#5. There was less tension on the C#5. I think I have expressed this before recently, but I’m going to say it again. I am not worried about a vocalist’s ability to sing high notes if they can’t support. I don’t want to start from hearing them singing strained high notes, I want to hear them singing a normal song and showing me control, support, a consistent stream of airflow while also connecting their vocal cords well. I could hear some of that here, but all I was exposed to was the fact that she, like many other young sopranos, can sing high with a lot of vocal strain from D5 ~ F#5 and has questionable consistency and support around Bb4 ~ C#5. She does support, that much I could hear. But I don’t want to hear her strained high notes before I establish if she can support, so please don’t just send compilations of strained high notes. Just for future reference, please. This isn’t just directed at you but everybody. I feel this way quite a lot when people always just think “high notes this and that.”
LikeLike
Wow, thanks so much for the detailed explanations o-O
Yes I completely misused the term crescendo, shame on me
And yeah, gotcha. I stumbled across this video the other day and in her part where she sung those higher notes and of course I wondered if she supported up there; but yeah, I won’t send anymore high note compilations unless there’s established support since, as you said, it makes no sense, but again ty!

Hiya! I know it seems a little early with the last time I asked you but this would probably the last for a while heh. I sang English songs that I think is pretty comfortable in my range. I don’t feel like I’m pushing too much but I think I can recognize some of the moments when I do.

A Whole New World, since Aladdin is about to come out lol. Are my A2s okay? I do wonder if I carry support throughout the verses and phrases or is my airflow still funky? I did try to be more relaxed. I like the sound of the C4 (i think) phrases in the first part of the chorus though. Oh and is the A3 pushed?

Open Arms. I was struggling a bit during the verses, I don’t even know why. It just feels like a little something will be off and I end up recording it again and again. Is the first C#4 (come) pushed? I feel like it might be.

To me, it sounds like I couldn’t really relax during the verses. It just didn’t sound like it was relaxed, I think it sounds a bit more heavy and tense. And I think I feel it when I sing. I try to execute the D4s the best but perhaps they’re not the problem. What do you think?

I’m very sorry that it took me this long to get to this but here I am.
I think there were a few pitchy moments in the last parts of a whole new world. There is a bit too much bouncing vocally, you keep overly emphasizing words and losing some of smoothness of the phrasing. Apart from that, it was okay. The general kind of wide shape of the throat is still there, but there was little tension. Especially when you sang softly, those notes were quite relaxed and nicely approached. I like the second part of the chorus where you didn’t try to overly project. That was quite nice there. The A2’s weren’t bad. The decide A2 was at the brink of running out of breath, but the other two were better kept within a range of breath management you could handle, so they came out better. They’re okay. The vowels are just too wide.
Careful, don’t do runs if you’re not sure where they’re going to land on Open Arms. They end up going off key, make sure you get exactly to where they’re meant to be within key. Open arms, the Oh vowel was very nicely shaped. The Come and Am become too wide, the vowel isn’t focused and the throat is spread out too much. The Here on the C#4 is actually very nicely put together, there’s little room for tension because the sound is more focused. You have to be careful with your vowels, they can get too wide.
LikeLike
Ah, I’m still really not sure on how to approach vowels so they are ‘opened’ but not too wide. I guess I was aiming for a more opened sound during the ‘Come’ and ‘arms’. Also, I’m still having a bit of trouble managing my breath so I can actually sing the lines smoothly, that’s pretty much why I have trouble with overemphasizing on words.
LikeLike
Always make sure to emphasize the throat being shaped more ovally, try to feel the soft palate lift and keep a slight Uh like quality throughout your vowels, while always making sure the jaw is dropped and the lips aren’t spread out.

Good day!! Just wanted to thank you guys for all the useful information! Can you do a short analysis on Stray kids’ vocal line based on this video? Thank you in advance and have a great day! Does woojin support in this video? And what are your general comments about his technique and points for improvement? Thank you so much!

Hello dear. I know you’ve asked about Stray Kids before a couple of time. Last time you also posted this video, but then you did include the names of every vocalist in the video. I’m sorry, but I’m not doing video questions anymore and I haven’t been doing so for a while, which is why I have not responded to your comments. However I’d like you to know why and acknowledge you, as I feel just ignoring your comment isn’t a nice thing to do. Questions that are general asking for a whole video’s analysis are time consuming and are hard for me to really grasp in terms of what you know, what you understand and what you want to know. I don’t like general comments. I did listen and I’m going to say Jeongin did not seem to support. As for Woojin and Seungmin, my previous comments more or less stand the same. Seungmin was tight on F4’s and F#4’s, he’s got some degree of shallow support with a relaxed approach below but there, it’s just shallow tightness. Someone did ask more specific questions about them recently and so I’ll copy-paste this one comment and video link. The video you provided is not live and so it’s not the most reliable source of singing critique. It’s something to go with, but not enough to talk about improvement. Also just because a vocalist has been singing for an extended period of time does not guarantee that they’ll have any improvement in vocal technique. Time =/= quality in practice. Same habits will stay the same unless the vocalist is consciously doing something to change them. I’m sorry but general questions won’t get good answers and I’m not a general answer kind of guy. So that’s why I’d rather ignore a comment and let someone else respond than give a generic answer.
“I really don’t like to answer questions that directly compare two vocalists because I don’t see the purpose of it. 3:33 F#4 for the green stripe, who I know is their main vocalist and I’ve heard sing with less throatiness before. He does not show support on F#4, but he is particularly throaty in this video. Generally he doesn’t support this high nonetheless, nor higher which was a good portion of the chorus of this song. He is generally shallow and his throat is tight. The guy with glasses is less tight, for sure. Less throaty. He isn’t supporting particularly well, but he has a more established sense of support from what I’m hearing in this video. 2:18 His F#4’s don’t carry too much throatiness, 2:25 but he’s still tight with a high larynx on G#4. Neither of them show particularly fantastic support nor development of their voices, but in this specific video glasses is less throaty and tight than green stripe. Okay glasses is Changbin, a rapper, and Woojin is the main vocalist.”

I was wondering if you think jin has been improving? In this truth untold live it looks like he has a decent sense of support and ease singing with less tension and more vibrato than before (despite some strain). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-AKm9o_7So (0:45-59)
LikeLike
I’m so sorry but I can’t say I hear a change. I don’t hear really any form of proper support. Not only has his posture remained the same, with him hunching back and pushing his neck forward, but his sound is also the same shallow, tight throat quality as before. Support isn’t something I’d say I can hear with any degree or sense of it, in this. Unfortunately. In order for Jin to improve he would have to be consciously trying to sing in a way that’s different than he’s accustomed to, and I’m not sure he is trying to sing differently.

Thank you for the reply!
Looking back on my comment last night i can see i picked a pretty rough example among many of what i thought was some improvement in his voice. Do you think this is any better in terms of technique? https://youtu.be/8RfMYBfosDQ (singing parts at 0:30, 1:30 and 2:55). I can tell he still strains at some points but he seems fairly relaxed and isn’t hunching himself over compared to the other one. I know he hasn’t made any drastic change but at the least i thought there was some minimal improvement given his clearer tone quality and posture, but maybe i was mistaking ease/lack of physical tenseness in some registers for support.
LikeLike
I’m sorry but I still hear similar issues. You could be confusing the lack of physical tension with ease or support. I wouldn’t say he strains at some points, there’s an underlying tightness throughout. When Jin sings there’s a lack of openness, where he is unable to relax his throat and keep the sound free. It’s always somewhat closed, with varying degrees that get tighter and tighter, the higher he goes. From 1:30 to 1:43, when he was singing notes around E3 ~ G#3, he was more relaxed. Still shallow, but as soon as he sings a note in the fourth octave, his throat closes. 1:44 was C4, and he already is closed there. He, a tenor, is closing his throat as early as C4. Anything above that is tighter and more strained. Jin may have shown more relaxed singing in slightly softer lower parts, but Jin has always shown tension in the fourth octave and even Bb3/B3.

Hello Ahimin, it’s been a long time aince I have asked your thought about NCT’s vocals. This is a video of NCT Taeil covering a song of Avery Wilson, I think at 0:13 up to 0:18 he hit some B4s (am I right or not? hehe) does he improve? compared to her past B4s? Does he support that note? and is his vibrato seems natural? or forced? Have a nice day Ahmin 😂 or any Admins that could answer my question 😂
LikeLike
I do think they’re B4’s. To say they’re improved or not I’d have to have kept a tab on Taeil in order to know. I haven’t analyzed him, I’m not sure if he’s been showing improvement. There’s strain, they’re tight in the beginning but they get better when he sings “we’re like a” although the strain isn’t gone. The vibrato isn’t forced, but it’s not relaxed enough. I think he does seem to be doing better than way back when they first debuted but as of this year, I’m not sure.

This is Park Woodam who was on the guys produce 101 and will be debuting with the HNB
He sounds relaxed in the verses (like 0:17-0:23). Is he supporting?
0:51-0:56 is a bit too high for him
In the beginning it kind of alternates between notes that are more comfortable vs ones that are high. How do you practice so that is could be a smoother transitions?
LikeLike
Hello. You mean when he was transitioning from mixed voice to falsetto? It’s hard to explain but it’s just a matter of connecting the bridges of the voice, so that one is able to keep a close placement with closed vocal cords even when changing from one register to the other. Without letting air come through the vocal cords and allowing no restriction to happen while keeping the stretch smooth and the notes right on pitch, they just have to keep practicing transitions and exercises that close the gap between registers. He does support, yes. You’re right, those notes are too high for him to sing without tension at this point.

Disrespecting the readers? They’re doing this FOR FREE. You don’t have any right to say they’re being disrespectful when they’re offering their knowledge and asking nothing in return. Ahmin and Pandayeu have stated many times that they’re busy with that special thing called “having a life” and they are not, in fact, your slaves. They both answer questions on the daily, and a decent chunk of them too. Yes, they haven’t posted an analysis in a while, but if you feel so entitled that you think you “deserve” another analysis, go make one your own.
About them taking the rankings down… they made a whole a** essay on why they thought it was necessary. Fans were mad that their faves weren’t ranked as high as they thought they should be, and fanwars were breaking out here and there. At the end of the day, the analyses have the content needed to understand a vocalist’s technique, not to mention if you’re smart enough, you’ll realise how certain labels (of the new ones) give info which is very close to the previous rankings.
Sorry for this rant, I just can’t deal with people who think deserve something when they’ve done t¡nothing in return. Learn what gratefulness is.

My specific question in this are:
1. If they all support their voices and if it’s only shallow or not?
2. If 0:43 to 0:54 are supported?
3. If the one who sings in the chorus supports her voice all along the chorus?
4. If the run in the last part of the song are executed well?
5. If 3:08 to 3:20 are supported notes?

Hey, I just wanted to know if Renjun, Jungwoo or Ten are able to support.
And would you say either Doyoung or Taeil or Jaehyun are a well rounded vocalists?

I was like who.. but then I realized NCT! Haha apart from Doyoung, Taeil or Jaehyun, I haven’t heard other members support. For them to be well rounded vocalists, they’d all have to have somewhat developed registers, all 3, and I don’t think any of them do.

Well, I was hoping that Renjun was able to support, but ok, hope he improves.
Also, Monsta X sang Versace on the floor, and everyone was impressed by Jooheons vocals, but, would you say he has some sense of support?

so, this guy basically destroys all your “support” and resonance” criteria, he says Kei is better than the other one and some of the examples are equal, so basically you should erase your page because it is spreading missinformation, mainly on the hispanic community, people that knows english take your comments about Jihyo or SEVENTEEN (crazy fans do) and they say that thy’re good vocalists and groups like RV or NCT are trash because they can’t produce resonance, which is something that you guys think is like the epitome of good singing. SOOOOO, yeah that, erase this sh*t pls.
LikeLike
Simply put, he’s a random person on the internet. First off, if you don’t know much about vocal technique, what solid proof from YOUR knowledge do you have to say that what he is saying is correct? Second of all, as someone who’s watched his videos, I can say that he definitely knows more than the average person, but his concept of resonance is very misguided. And lastly, in pop context, resonance refers to support + 0 tension + good placement + openness + optimal projection. It is considered the epitome of good singing because, quite frankly, it is. Also, people who say Wendy is not a good vocalist just because she lacks consistent resonance are ignorant. Resonance is optimal, yes, but Wendy supports over 2 octaves and has ease outside her supported range. Resonance is a huge plus and that’s undeniable, but there’s more to singing than just that. About NCT… as an NCTzen I have to admit that, aside from Taeil, NCT vocalists are kinda underwhelming. It’s not due to the fact that they can’t produce resonance, it’s due to the fact that they have some not-too-extensive supported ranges. They’re not weak at all, but they’re hardly comparable to some other great vocalists out there. Jihyo can’t produce resonance herself (iirc) so I really don’t know why people would be comparing her to other vocalists who can’t either (when talking about resonance).
There are respectful ways of stating opinions, and if you want to agree with that youtuber, that’s fine, you’re allowed to have opinions (despite the fact that you’re quite clearly not too knowledgeable when it comes to vocal technique), but don’t say stuff like “erase this sh*t pls” just because you disagree with something, discrediting the work of people like Ahmin, Pandayeu and all other contributors to this site who have received PROFESSIONAL vocal training and lessons for years, and know what they’re talking about. Yes, that youtuber may have gotten professional training too, and I’m not denying that. He’s allowed to have his thoughts on resonance and I’m sure a polite and respectful debate would be welcome. But your comment was, not only biased, but FAR from being respectful.

He seems more professional than the persons who write on this page, so I believe in him. Im not biased, and my problem is not with this page itself, it is with the community they formed, brainwashed persons that believe their idols are better than mine because they “can support” more notes than other, that’s trash. Wendy is better than Taeyeon. I’m tired of hearing that my faves are trash because they can’t support, like lovelyz, they’re music is great but because this page says they can’t support, hispanic community treats them like shit. same case with nct, red velvet (because of Joy) and so many other. So yeah, erase this sh*tty *ss page right now.

I’m curious about your thoughts on NCT, what do you think about Jungwoo or RenJun? Also, would you say they’re the most vocally capable male group in the new generation?

If people treat Lovelyz like shit, that’s not because of “lack of knowledge” on this page. It’s because some people are douchebags. You’re free to believe Wendy is stronger than Taeyeon and in some ways I understand what you’re trying to say. But it’s not all about supported ranges, there’s so much more to being a vocalist and resonance is, whether you like it or not, a very crucial and game-changing aspect.
It seems to me that you’re blaming this page just because other people are using it with evil intentions. If you go to Kei’s analysis, you will see how she actually DOES support. Facts are facts. Lovelyz have good music, and people shitting on them (or any other group) for not having god-tier vocals is a very mean and disrespectful thing.
And you are biased. “…brainwashed persons that believe their idols are better than MINE” just because they are your idols doesn’t mean they are the most talented out there. I am a blink. I stan Blackpink and love Rosé with all my heart and soul, but she has a lot to work on as a vocalist, and me throwing a pity party won’t change that, and the same goes for you. I understand your feelings of anger at the fact that people are attacking your faves, and the admins are well aware that this happens from time to time. They have said multiple times that they don’t condone these actions, and people who attack idols are known as trolls for a reason. Their purpose is to hurt you, and you’re letting them do just that.
FACTS ARE FACTS. Facts don’t care about your feelings. These analyses help so many people, such as myself, who want to learn about vocal technique and idols’ vocal abilities. I have never attacked a weak vocalist, yet you’re assuming everyone here is “brainwashed”?
If you have someone to be mad at, it’s the people who insult your idols. NOT the people who have written factual analyses that make you mad as they’re not what you’d like them to be. Cheers

It sounded narrow? I’m not sure what word to use, but there’s little space in his throat. Instead of an opened round shape, his throat is generally narrower than it should be and the sound is generally quite shallow. It’s definitely strained. Hi, forgive me,I don’t know if I have left a similar message before or not (not great memory regarding certain things), but if so I am sorry, its just been in my thoughts for quite sometime.
I know you have Day6 Sungjin in your vocal analysis list for some time in the future and as a fan who love their songs I am grateful. As a person who has followed the group since 2015,I can’t help feel that maybe you should check again before deciding to react to Sungjin, mainly because I feel compared to his initial days (before mid 2017) he would have been a good subject to do analysis on, in fact I love his predebut era alot too, but due to how hectic and busy they have become and due to improper singing technique and due to how some of their songs are not in his comfortable range (his seems to have been shortened since before Ex perf in Colors,I Like You),I can’t help feel his vocals have suffered quite a bit. I know you usually react to Main vocalist of groups, but in Day6 this position is a very unclear position because the band changes their position depending on each song ( which line of the song suits whom) esp since 2017. And I know you avoid anybody with a rapper designation but Youngk sings more than he raps(and was a singer before starting to rap for the group) it would be nice if you looked in before doing Sungjin’s analysis or any other member , like Wonpil (tho still nasally) or Jae.I just feel the dynamics of the band has changed over the years
I might be wrong. I don’t know. I just want to to give a suggestion because I don’t know if you follow Day6 closely enough. I am not asking you analyse more than 1 member, just a suggestion to look it through before you start on Sungjin in the future, as I think the blog usually analyses to best singer in the group.
If this post irritated you or is against some of the violation I am sorry 😥. I have had no time to explore this blog properly yet. Sorry. And Thanks Ahead for whenever you decide to reply.

Sorry to bother you but I Just saw your 2nd comment to the first person.
Just want to add to my long paragraph, is that Day6- Colors was a song which Sungjin used to sing without a huge problem (atleast to our my unrefined ears 2015-2017) but now its become such that he can’t hit his high notes as well as he used to do before. Plus since 2017 he has alot of grittiness to his vocals, strain even for the songs he used to sing comfortably before.
Day6- I Like You is one of their High songs and out of them Sungjin suffers through it alot. 3/4 of his perf in that song he doesn’t hit the last high note he does even crack, but 1/4 perf I have seen him do it well. Like its like he plans ahead his breathing to accommodate that high note. The thing about I Like You is that all of the members get to sing that chorus (some of their songs have repetitive parts so all the members get a chance to sing chorus which is usually high ), but Sungjin seems to be the only one who often has trouble with it. Overall grittiness has grown over the years.
Despite your comment before I can’t help worry that their is some wrong technical singing going on.
Just for future reference songs which I feel are their difficult songs (Japanese not included)-
Day6-Colors,I Need Somebody,I Like You, Shoot Me, Better Better (not sure but Good Bye Winter)

Hey Ahmin
So (g)i-dle’s main vocalist Miyeon has a predebut video of her singing and there’s a certain part of the song that people were praising her for switching vocal registers from chest voice to head voice then back to chest voice and it was with full support form 0:49 to 0:55 and I just wanted to get your full input and know if it’s true. I also want to ask if there was any resonance when she was singing or if she had good tonality and if there is anything else impressive that she did there that you’d like to point out in this video when she was singing in that timestamp
Also at 0:58-1:04, she ties to attempt a high note I guess, I’m wondering if if she supported it but I get the feeling that there was tension in her voice or her throat but I’m no vocal expert so that’s why I’m asking you I guess =]
thank you~
LikeLike
My thoughts are that she’s pretty constricted throughout. The shape of her throat is kind of squeezed so even in lower notes, there’s restriction and tension. Full support? I wouldn’t say so. The transition specifically at 0:54 was nice but otherwise it wasn’t anything incredibly difficult but it was done well. The high note in head voice had a very wobbly and fast vibrato. That’s what I’m hearing overall.

Hi Ahmin, just a curious question regarding support and resonance. Is it common, even for the very skilled vocalists, to vacillate between support with resonance and support without resonance when executing mid-range or high-range belts? If so, what could be the reason for the intermittent loss of resonance in spite of the consistent support? Thanks!

Resonance isn’t directly related to support but instead placement and throat shaping. So if a vocalist isn’t consistently placing their sound while keeping their throats open, resonance won’t be achieved.

The chorus at 1:43 is full of E4s and F#4s. I remember you said he carries some support up to F4; I can def hear pushing here but I’m wondering if these are mostly supported.
There’s also a G4, G#4, and B4 at 3:20, though I assume those are strained. Thank you!

I’m not sure I’m feeling him on the F#4’s, I’m hearing more than a little tongue and throat tension closing those notes. Like it’s not too intense, but it’s shallow in quality and not open. It’s a sound coming from the throat.

Okay, so tongue tension, throat tension, shallowness, and throaty placement. Is there a difference between openness and not having tension? And would you say his E4s were more opened? Thank you!

Not having tension is neutral, openness is open. It’s 5 vs 10, and yes his E4’s were much more relaxed.

The vowel shape in itself was opened, the note in itself was pretty pushed. I’d reason that with the fact that she came down from very pushed shouty mixed notes, E5 and D5, so the pushing carried over.

I’ll say that I can’t watch the last two videos cause they’re blocked for me, but the first and the 2015 one..I’d say he sounded fuller and more supported in 2015 than this specific performance. I hear tightness overall and shallowness above E4/F4, his G4’s don’t carry support. The rest is a bit ambiguous, but in 2015 he was fuller for sure comparing these two videos alone.

Hello! I’m back with more questions!
1:46, G#4s from Taeil, are they resonant?
2:15, Eb4-G#4s from Haechan, are they too shallow to be supported? Is there tension?
2:29, F#5 run from Doyoung, is it mixed?? It sounds like head at first but not in the middle.
2:47, C#5 run from Haechan, is it falsetto? How was the run in terms of separation and accuracy?
Thank you as always!!!
LikeLike
1:46 Do they seem resonant to you? I ask because it’s not your first time asking, you ask questions quite a bit on this blog and I genuinely think you could put your input here. Because these notes are very tight, his vowels are really closed throughout those G#4’s.
2:15 They’re not too shallow to be supported, they’re strained. He was too shallow to be considered supported before 2:15 where he was shallow and somewhat tight but not singing too high. After that it was just strained singing. Tight throat, small sound output, no true support.
2:29 I think it’s a mask placed head voice, but it is confusing.
2:47 It is not separated and it is not accurate. He rushed with a slide through the run and yes it is falsetto.

As for your question, Taeil (and a few others) are a lot more difficult for me to hear technique because his timbre itself is really round/smooth. I think it makes strain or tightness more subtle. Bottom line my knowledge/ear is limited and I get confused haha.

0:10 G#4? You mean the really quick phrased G#4 followed by the sustained F#4? I mean they’re both connected enough, not very opened, not very well supported. The G#4 closed a bit more than the F#4 and was less connected.

This is Sera, who left 9Muses (who just announced their disbandment, but I’m not surprised). I forgot that she remained active after leaving, and I stumbled upon this. The song is a pretty narrow range and she sounds to be doing okay, and I feel like she doesn’t sound as nasal now compared to her 9M days. Hi Ahmin, two quick questions regarding resonance.
1) Is resonance purely a product of optimal placement and projection, or can it also be a stylistic choice, in which case vocalists can consciously vacillate between producing and not producing resonance to suit the song’s needs?
2) Which vocalists are most consistent in producing and maintaining resonance in kpop?

She has a very light and bright voice, she does lower her larynx on lower notes and places her sound kind of lower so she lacks brightness in placement but her actual voice is pretty light. There’s a song where she sounds almost like Mamamoo’s Wheein, so I’m pretty certain she’s a soprano. Oh that’s a tough video to make, interesting though. It’s hard to really tell since most people don’t really use very well developed chest voices these days.
Does she really sound like a mezzo to you here?

Hi, I have a question: how can I make my mixed voice more chesty? It’s too heady and whiny :c

Do you watch the vocal tips for K-pop fans series we have posted here? Even if I respond that you should use exercises with more chestiness to blend it into your mix, I’d highly recommend watching those videos because there’s one specifically about developing the mixed voice with chestiness and one about support, #8, that would help a lot too.
