Rappers
Rules
For analyses of members of idol groups, we only analyze vocalists. We do not analyze rappers, even if they may sing at times if their main instrument is rapping, we will not analyze them as it is not fair to them. If a rapper happens to have significant vocal skill then they shall be considered for an analysis.
We only analyze up to half of the vocalists in a group, and only the strongest half. If a group has 8 members but 4 are rappers, then we’ll only analyze up to half of the vocalists in that group. So in this case only up to 2/4 vocalists will be analyzed. If the vocalists in a group happen to be more vocally skilled and balanced, then more vocalists will be analyzed within a group, such as the case with SHINee, Brown Eyed Girls and Mamamoo.
We only analyze vocalists with sufficient material for an analysis. Therefore groups that debuted more recently, such as in 2016 and 2017, will not be analyzed due to the lack of material. We prioritize vocalists who have longer careers with more material for an analysis.
*******WE ARE NO LONGER TAKING REQUESTS ******* because the list of vocalist to be analyzed has reached a fairly lengthy size, we will be no longer accepting requests until the list decreases in size.
Disbanded groups or members who left their groups and are now not active anymore in the mainstream will NOT be analyzed. Even if they may be active, they’d need to be significantly vocally skilled to be considered for an analysis. If they’re active outside of Korea/K-pop, they’re not K-Contemporary artists anymore, therefore will NOT be analyzed.
With trendy TV shows like Idol School and Produce 101, we must inform you we will NOT analyze temporary groups as there will not be enough material within their one year together to write a full analysis for their main/lead vocalists. These vocalists shall be analyzed once they re-debut under a solo stage name or under another group in the future, following the guidelines provided above regarding material, positions and relevancy within their groups.

If any of you would like your idol to be analyzed, drop your request in the comment box. If you attach videos/recordings of their (preferably) latest live performances, it will be helpful. But then again, it will not guarantee that your idol will be analyzed since it will depend on our contributors. We can’t even guarantee when we will release the analysis of the above mentioned future projects. One other reason is that analyzing vocal when there isn’t enough material to judge them will be challenging and more or less inaccurate. This will explain why judging rookie idols is an issue.

Never mind, I understand now. But I was just wondering, did Ailee’s voice deepen from maturing or from damaging it? Here’s a recent performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3YzedRVtAY. Back in June, I thought Ailee would never recover, as her voice was already overworked(?) from the concert tour she did in late-2019. After that, she participated in a singing show. Now her voice sounds a lot better, without the rasp but still deeper. Can her voice ever go back to how it used to be in 2012-2013 or aging has just affected her voice?

Someone said Jung dongha’s voice is lighter than Park hyoshin in twitter. Is that true?
LikeLike
I’m not sure I agree since I never thought about it.

Okay. Thank you.

actually it is true Park hyoshin has more weighty tenor voice than all the Korean tenors i heard except maybe son junho . jung dongha has a small lighter tenor voice in comparison he just worked hard to developed his voice so it sounds bigger it similar case with ailee , some people think she has a bigger vocal weight than what she naturally has but that just her lowered larynx position added to a significant amount of chest coordinated into her mid voice and mid-belt
LikeLike
Lim jaebum sounds like tenor who has heavier voice than hyoshin to me. Am I right?
LikeLike
I don’t know if I think Lim Jaebum is a tenor. Unless he’s a dramatic, I always thought he was a baritone. I could be wrong.
LikeLike
I wouldn’t compare Jung Dongha and Ailee. Ailee pushes weight, Jung Dongha doesn’t. Jung Dongha still has a darker heavier quality than Kyuhyun or Sandeul for instance.
LikeLike
i know that ailee push, dongha push higher than her in his upper belts but they still use darker rounder vowels in comparison to the usual idols approach that the similarity i wanted to highlight ,he still has a weight of a lyric tenor he just have a more developed chestier rounder technique, that darker heavier quality is his technique it not natural like park hyo shin naturally more medium tenor type, just like most people think Lara fabian is full lyric when she isn’t . Not to be rude to you ahmin but i don’t think you have the experience for vocal types
LikeLike
Oh I know I don’t, which is why I stopped adding voice types to the blog. Because I am aware of what I know and what I don’t. But not only do I disagree with you that DongHa’s and Ailee’s vowel shapes are hardly comparable, you make it seem like you have experience for voice types which is not something I gathered so far with your comments. Actually I’ve been curious after seeing you post so much on here Helena. Where are you from and where do you live Helena?

Hey Ahmin, what do you think of 1:28 to 1:47 in this clip:
They are two of IZ*ONE’s lead vocals who are obviously just messing around but I was wondering if you hear any sense of support and if it is all in mixed voice?
LikeLike
I would really REALLY rather not judge them based off of this. Because I don’t know IZ*ONE well at all and this being a first impression of their lead vocalists, it doesn’t paint a good picture. Yes it was mixed, but to say that I hear stablished support isn’t something I can confidently say. The blonde one maybe? But this isn’t a good video to go by.
LikeLike
Haha yeah I definitely agree that these clips are not the best to gauge any sort of vocal prowess but it was more for me to try to understand the concept of mixed voice since I always feel that the transition from mixed to head voice is less clear for girls than for guys, so thank you for that!
In terms of actually assessing their ability to support, could you please have a look at the following? (not attaching a clip of the main vocal since you already mentioned that she has support up to C5/C#5 in her masked singer performances)
Lead Vocal (Yena) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRnlJFpIytE (2:14 to 2:36)
Lead Vocal (Chaewon) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXLpbrxYAWw (0:30 to 0:45)
Lead Vocal (Yujin) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tl2v5GGGMo (0:20 to 0:30)
Lead Vocal (Chaeyeon) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmir5rslwU4 (0:32 to 0:52)

Btw Andy I know you asked me about your own singing and I’m sorry, I didn’t purposely ignore it. I just keep forgetting to respond. I will eventually.
They have 3 lead vocalists? I don’t need to listen to 2:13 ~ 2:34 because you’re highlighting the part where she’s singing the highest. And I have mentioned many times before I hear a vocalist straining on an E5, like she did, I’d rather hear them singing in a normal mid range to establish if there’s support. Yena’s pitch is generally pretty good, she’s very breathy and thin though. There is a degree support though. Her breathing can be shallow oftentimes. Was she in the other clip?
Chaewon is very closed and nasal. The last video of wrecking ball is similar to something I got recently when someone asked about Baekhyun and posted them singing along to the original recording of a singer. This is also NOT a good video to talk about their vocal skill.
This video was a suggested video and it’s much better to establish that she sounds very shallow. Her support isn’t strong, her vowels are very closed. Even around A4/Bb4 she’s pretty closed. The Bb4’s in Wrecking Ball were pretty pushed, the A4’s in I See The Light too, B4 and C5 don’t even need to be explained.
Yujin is also very closed and shallow. Her support is shallow throughout, the most shallow of the three. Neither Yujin nor Chaeyeon support well, Chaeyeon having more of a degree of support present than Yujin. Yena seems to have more support but again none of them seem worth me writing an analysis for now.
I want to point out that even though you’re giving me time stamps, your questions are still more or less generic. And I am providing more information than I should.
LikeLike
I really appreciate you taking out the time to reply despite the generic questions, that was quite helpful! Also, no worries haha I am willing to wait for some feedback on my singing :). Yep Yena was in the other clip (the blonde one) and Chaewon was the girl with shorter hair.
They actually have 5 lead vocals (its a 12 member group) and 1 main vocal – Jo Yuri, who is inarguably the best vocalist in the group and the only one you are likely inclined to analyse (if you do ever plan on doing so I look forward to it!)
As for the lead vocals, I think their strongest one is actually Eunbi but she does not really have much non-studio/performance based material so I could not attach anything for her.
Fun Fact: Yena is also the main rapper in the group (she still gets plenty of vocal lines though). Also the group is quite young so I think they will have plenty of time to grow!

No no baby, you’re fine. I love how the camera suddenly focused on the random foreign people in the audience. It’s great. Uhm I’m not sure cause the run in itself isn’t fast, he’s doing a melismastic vocal line sure but it’s kind of messy on purpose? It’s like an alternative rock run, not necessarily supposed to be rhythmically and melodically even. The way it sounds fits the genre to me, but I wouldn’t consider it a smooth R&B run, since it’s not trying to be that.

Hey Ahmin I hope you’re doing well. I really wanna get better at picking apart vocal perfomances so I’ve chosen to talk about Denise who is the main vocal of the new girl group Secret Number
I’m gonna say what I think but if you have some spare time would you mind telling me if I’m wrong or right in what I’m saying?
0:14 she seems to start off quite high already which is hard with this song because it just keeps going higher. I think she’s quite pitchy throughout. 0:35 she sounds more comfortable here, she has a nice natural sounding voice which makes her pleasant to listen to. 0:49 sloppy vocal run then she goes off pitch. Throughout the chorus she is definitely straining and her vibrato is quite unstable. She seems to place her voice quite high which means she strains when she has to go higher. From this clip I think she shows at least some evidence of support but definitely not consistently. Sorry for not using proper terminology haha but what do you think?
LikeLike
I’m not ahmin, but I am curious to know his answer as well.
Not an expert, but I don’t really hear proper vibrato here. Actually, to me she sounds nervous throughout the performance. The little fluctuations/vibrations that you may associate with vibrato here sound more like nerves to me, but maybe Ahmin will clear this up.
Support is definitely very shallow in my opinion? Besides the drops in support every now and then, I also hear some sound/support stuck in the throat here and there.
And yeah the strain becomes very apparent imo when she goes into the chorus at 0:50 ish.
—-
I’m actually not familiar with Secret Number nor Denise, but I love using this blog to learn more vocals, so I’m really curious about Ahmin’s answer. See if I picked up a few things, or if I’m saying complete bullshit (which I might…because, like I said, no expert whatsoever).

Hi, I do think she did showcase decent support throughout this song.
0:17 nice Bb3
0:20 low larynx F3
0:40 supported Bb4
0:50 she’s getting flat
0:57 nicely supported Bb4, followed by strained C5 and D5
So perhaps an Average vocalist. Hope it helps.

I was wondering how Soobin’s high note compares to Yeonjung. Is one better? (It sounded like this song was lip synced or prerecorded a lot when promoted but I do actually think Soobin did not lip sync the high note since she lost lines due to everyone kind of forgetting she was main vocalist once Yeonjung was added to the group)
Yeonjung starts at 3:00 with high note at 3:10
Soobin (short hair) at an event where Yeonjung wasn’t there. Starts are about 3:13 with high note at 3:25

Alright ahmin, I got another question myself.
I really want to ask your thoughts on some LOONA stuff. Before I start, I’d rather ask your opinion on how you’d prefer I ask these questions.
A) Really short clips (or at least short “timestamps”, ex: “around @2:50 – 2:58 how was this and that”, “what about 3:25 – 3:28?”, etc)
B) A looooooot longer clips with more in-depth performances that aren’t just a bunch of (strained) C5-G5s – where, instead, the singers are actually singing in a much easier range (E4-B4 ish for the Sopranos etc), and where I don’t ask specific questions (so no “How was the B4 there?”), but where you can kind of get a better grasp of how they (generally) manage their breath, dynamics, when do they switch to headvoices (do they have headvoice? do they prefer falsetto? etc), what their chest register sounds like? etc.
Option B objectively sounds better obviously to make a proper educated guess, but I also know you don’t have a lot of time right now. Thing is, I would really love an answer on those questions I have. Option B would take a lot of time for you to “listen” (and I guess make up your mind/opinions), and I don’t want it to get lost and then never answered because of that. So I don’t really know how to proceed?
LikeLike
From what I’ve heard from LOONA, Haseul is their best vocalist, with a well-developed head voice around F5/F#5. Her other registers are kind off under-developed tho. She should be comfortable supporting around Bb3/B3 – G4/G#4 – F5/F#5 imo.
LikeLike
From what I’ve heard, Chuu seems like much more rounded vocalist, with a developed headvoice as well, except she’s shown a better sense of support and placement in her mixed register in her confortable range as opposed to Haseul, and to an extent, lower register (although it’s still fairly undeveloped).
Either way, that wasn’t the point of my post. I want a more “”in-depth”” (nothing too crazy, not a fullblown analysis) review of a few members. That’s why I was interested in Option B where I wouldn’t just include high notes and what not, and would try to show how the girls actually sing when they are in their confortable range.

I’m curious. Does SIyeon from DC have shallow support? I’ve heard someone say that she supports between A3-A4/Bb4 but I didn’t hear any support within that range. I’ve only heard it sometimes around G#4/A4. I’m really confused.
LikeLike
I don’t think she has shown enough development to be considered having true support. Shallow at times, maybe, but I wouldn’t bet on it. She seems to prefer rock heavy performances so I guess stylistic singing is what she’s been aiming? Yoohyeon to me is a better vocalist though. She seems to support quite consistently although it is not strong to begin with.

Hi Ahmin. I know you prefer live performances, but I’m curious about Yuju’s newest OST:
Is she supporting here? Are the notes at 3:01, 3:08 (E5s, I think??), 3:16, and 3:27 (F#5s, I think?) supported? (am I totally off about which notes those are?). How do her runs sound?
I know it’s less obvious in studio, so I’m sorry!

she strained those E5s, F5s you listed and also C#5s 1:22; 1:36; 2:56; 2:58 as well. Even the B4s and Bb4s in this OST were tight, very unlike her usual self. The runs were nice and she improved her low a bit I think, supported G#3s at 0:25 and 0:28 were very nice.

Yoohyeon seems to be the strongest in DC. She has consistent support between A3-A4/Bb4. Siyeon just has an extensive mixed range but no support whatsoever. It’s also kind of saddening how her voice would be ruined in the end tbh. All dc’s songs have SIyeon belting quite high.

He responded a few months ago about BTS:
“Hi baby. Okay so one thing at a time. You asked me if it was just that he sounds better, right? See I’m not entirely sure what that means, because if you mean if I like the sound of his voice better or something then that’s subjective and irrelevant to the fundamentals this blog is built upon. My personal preference would never cloud my judgement when comparing vocalists. So yes I did mean that V had better technique than Jungkook. I believe it’s actually written in the analysis what I meant but I’ll explain again. Basically I meant that as a baritone, V’s mid range lies around A2 to D4 or so, whereas Jungkook’s mid range as a tenor lies between C3 and F#4 or so. Within their respective mid ranges, V had shown a slightly better grasp of proper breath support. Meaning, he’d connect his vocal cords with more development and strength, without pushing as much air, without squeezing his throat as much and without losing placement. Jungkook would often push air and squeeze relatively earlier than V. Now that was before V started going for that darker sound he seems to favor where he sings while pushing his tongue back, and with breathiness too. You have to keep in mind that when you listen to their music, they’re singing in the same exact key. In other words, the notes around F4 to G4 are relatively easier for Jungkook because his voice is higher. He could only sound better, it wouldn’t be helped. V is at a disadvantage having to sing with 3 other tenors while his voice is lower, he still has to hit the same notes as them. Those notes are higher for him, naturally. Now do I still stand by this? At this point I have moved away from trying to compare vocalists as that serves little purpose. In reality, neither of them have developed their voices with exceptional technique. Neither have a strong grasp of support, neither produce true resonance and both seem to favor a specific stylistic approach to singing over developing more flexible technique. Is that bad? When they strain, yes. When it’s within a relatively comfortable range, it’s fine. It’s limiting, but fine. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who has a slight edge over the other because neither are trying to be vocalists with exceptionally developed technique. All I wish is for them not to hurt themselves, and if they wish to develop their voices further there are many ways in which they could. But if they don’t wish to, then that’s up to them. You don’t need to have good vocal technique to be a successful singer, so if they’re happy I just wish they’re healthy and take care of their precious instruments.”

Learned from it a lot.

Quite noticeable that Rosie stands out tha most, supports up to A4 with occasional Bb4. But I feel like most of the time she leans too much on stylistic singing so that’s why she’s yet to develop her mix more consistent above Bb4.

hello, can i ask you a question? Is Rosie’s C5 in coachella and A_nation festival supported or not?

1:29 Was this C5 resonant?

Im having trouble being sure it’s supported. I don’t think it’s resonant at all, I think I hear constriction but the mixing itself is good. I just hear tension.

Can’t believe this is still active! I used to read through this all the time and I love your work. I noticed Minx/Dreamcatcher’s Siyeon and Yoohyeon were listed on future but never got around to. Any quick thoughts on Siyeon in particular? Big fan of hers!

one thing I’ve gathered from her is the rock-based throaty singing style. Yoohyeon seems to have a more established form of true support.

Someone said decresendo can’t be showed without proper technique. Is it true?
LikeLike
A well executed one, as well as a well executed crescendo, usually require good muscle coordination and breath. Poorly executed ones can still be shown.

Thank you. Is decrescendo much harder than crescendo(he also said it)

I don’t think it should be? They should be equally as difficult?

Well see the thing is I don’t know who this expert is, but all I’m hearing is the result. Honestly I’ve never thought about this and I could very well be wrong. I just would need a decent and reasonable explanation because I don’t see why it’d be more difficult.

Hello there. I have a question about IZ*ONE’s Kim Chaewon. She’s one of the lead vocalists in the group. I have a few clips of her singing and I was wondering if she has established support in her singing.
1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXLpbrxYAWw&ab_channel=holyjjoyul
2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDnwVyMu-5c&ab_channel=MnetK-POP (Chaewon sings from 0:57 to 1:06, 3:21 to 3:24, and 3:31 to 3:41
3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpqBNzQV9HY&ab_channel=MnetOfficial (Chaewon sings from 0:30 to 0:42, 1:32 to 1:37)
These are just a few clips I could find. Thank you.

Hello, Can you analyze this part of kang kyun sung’s singing in masked singer. The timestamps already there in the link just click it 🙂
Also if you will add how is this done? the placement or anything else, I will greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much!

your analyses is like the only thing I believe in now, I’ve become more aware of crying-wolf critics thanks to you. since this is only for kpop and I want to learn more about vocal technique from western singers, do you know other vocal analysis blog that you find as reliable as yours?

Curious about some of 4th octave belts Hyunjin does in this clip (only 12 seconds long): https://twitter.com/coIorbit/status/1333608360558686210
Hyunjin is not really a big part of the vocal line of LOONA, and she’s usually a much more stylistic singer (she *likes* to be airy, she wants her voice “to sound like mist”), but this clip kinda go against that.
I’m not saying this is perfect, I can already tell that her soft palette could be raised a little a bit more (although I don’t think it’s completely dropped here), and her throat could be a little bit more open….but do I hear support with a little pushment???? There’s a relatively decent vibrato in one of those belt too, and it doesn’t sound “forced from the throat” to me, but I’m not confident enough about that assessment.

Somebody said light lyric tenor’s conversation is mainly in Eb3-G#3. Is it true?

Conversation? You mean their speaking range? I’d say it’s lower for sure.

Yes I mean speaking range. Would you please tell me light lyric tenor’s speaking range?

It depends but most baritones I know speak with A2 as the basis note and range up to D3 and down to F2. Tenors tend to be a bit higher like around C3 and D3 and range up to F and down to Bb2? Ish. Some people like D.O. tend to speak too low with a low larynx tho.

Hello, do you know what is twang?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Twang is a sort of whiny and nasal quality in singing, but not the closed type. Usually nasality or whininess stems from singing through the nose, whereas twang places more in the mask and has a very bright and forward quality.

Does Ha hyun woo uses nasality? Or twang?

It’s sad to hear that Yuju is regressing, she cannot support C5 anymore and even has the inconsistency on Bb4s.

Not a question, I just want to share Ha hyun woo’s 2004 performance. I think his vocal has shown huge change as Park hyo shin.

hey can I ask what your overall impression of Kim Feel is? Is he a decent vocalist?

like in this performance I wonder where this kind of ‘grating’ like raspy sound of hiss voice comes from? is it just his voice tone or a stylistic thing or bad technique?
LikeLike
He is very stylistic and I have never heard him not rely on those stylistic devices so I don’t know what to say about his technique. I think he has one style that works for him and he sticks to it.
