Rules

For analyses of members of idol groups, we only analyze vocalists. We do not analyze rappers, even if they may sing at times if their main instrument is rapping, we will not analyze them as it is not fair to them. If a rapper happens to have significant vocal skill then they shall be considered for an analysis.

We only analyze up to half of the vocalists in a group, and only the strongest half. If a group has 8 members but 4 are rappers, then we’ll only analyze up to half of the vocalists in that group. So in this case only up to 2/4 vocalists will be analyzed. If the vocalists in a group happen to be more vocally skilled and balanced, then more vocalists will be analyzed within a group, such as the case with SHINee, Brown Eyed Girls and Mamamoo.

We only analyze vocalists with sufficient material for an analysis. Therefore groups that debuted more recently, such as in 2016 and 2017, will not be analyzed due to the lack of material. We prioritize vocalists who have longer careers with more material for an analysis.

*******WE ARE NO LONGER TAKING REQUESTS ******* because the list of vocalist to be analyzed has reached a fairly lengthy size, we will be no longer accepting requests until the list decreases in size.

Disbanded groups or members who left their groups and are now not active anymore in the mainstream will NOT be analyzed. Even if they may be active, they’d need to be significantly vocally skilled to be considered for an analysis. If they’re active outside of Korea/K-pop, they’re not K-Contemporary artists anymore, therefore will NOT be analyzed.

With trendy TV shows like Idol School and Produce 101, we must inform you we will NOT analyze temporary groups as there will not be enough material within their one year together to write a full analysis for their main/lead vocalists. These vocalists shall be analyzed once they re-debut under a solo stage name or under another group in the future, following the guidelines provided above regarding material, positions and relevancy within their groups.

If any of you would like your idol to be analyzed, drop your request in the comment box. If you attach videos/recordings of their (preferably) latest live performances, it will be helpful. But then again, it will not guarantee that your idol will be analyzed since it will depend on our contributors. We can’t even guarantee when we will release the analysis of the above mentioned future projects. One other reason is that analyzing vocal when there isn’t enough material to judge them will be challenging and more or less inaccurate. This will explain why judging rookie idols is an issue.

  1. I am quite excited to see the future singers especially Kim Gun Mo, and Sung Si Kyung and like at least 15 more, it’s a shame that the list has gotten so long lol, I would’ve requested Shin Seung Hun definitely, Jo Sung Mo, and Lee Seung Hwan too, but that’d be asking for too much, keep up the good work it was fun reading these analysis on singers I was curious about.

  2. Damn this website has me wanting to see even more of singer analysis, one singer I would like to see would be Jo Kwan Woo too.

  3. Laboum has been promoting Journey to Atlantis again, years after the original release. Has there been any improvement in their main vocal? At the very least, they all look well rested compared to their radio show appearance years ago. So even if there isn’t technical improvement I think they sound a lot better

  4. I made short Ha hyunwoo vocal analysis haha
    Voice type
    Tenor
    Vocal range
    B1~B5(4 octaves,1 semitone)
    Supported range
    A2/Bb2~A4/Bb4
    A2/Bb2~G5(with head voice)
    Strengths/Achievement
    • Head voice is very well connected and often resonant
    • Head voice is supported up to G5
    • Mix voice is resonant up to A4/Bb4
    • Has sung well placed notes above his supported range
    • Chest voice is supported down to A2/Bb2
    • Uses relaxed fry register with good sense
    • Learned to lighten up and brighten up his tone over the years for better resonance/projection/ease
    • Shows great control of dynamics and placement
    • Can mix in the fifth octave for long periods of time without fatigue
    Points for improvement
    • Larnyx position is often too high
    • Mix voice shows a lot of tension above A4/Bb4
    • Head voice is strained above G5
    • Chest voice loses support below A2/Bb4
    • Tends to present nasality(arguably stylistic)
    • Often too rocky and tends to sing outside of supported range
    • Vocal fry is used too much

    1. We’re definitely getting a Yoohyeon analysis for sure (if they resume back again) since she’s the strongest vocalist and the only one who actually supports (I believe she supports B3-A4/Bb4 if my memory is serving me well…it’s not exactly “strong” per se, but it’s there) in Dreamcatcher.

For Siyeon, she doesn’t support her voice at all: the difference between her and Yoohyeon is more significant than the gap between the rest of the members despite the general consensus lol. From what I’ve seen so far, they don’t write analyses for vocalists who don’t support unless they’re like super popular or overrated. So for Siyeon, I think it can go either way (she doesn’t support, but at the same time some people (especially fans) think she’s one of the best in the 3rd gen lol and she’s the main vocalist of the group…so we’ll see).

  5. Damn this website is so amazing, but what makes it so hard for me is just waiting till vocal analysis on my favorite singer’s are gonna be here, lol what’s worse to me personally though is that I still keep listening to more and more kpop and I’ve been getting into even more singers. A recent one is Byun Jin sub, I would totally request Byun Jin Sub if I could.

  6. I wonder if you’ll reconsider analysing SHINee’s Key, especially now I think that he’s more stable than Taemin (in my non-expert hearing), though I know that you will only analyze up to half of the vocalists in a group, and only the strongest half.

  7. Hi!

Curious about something regarding Winter and NingNing from aespa. We’ve already established that these two have some form of support, at the very least within the fourth octave.

Obviously though most of the big high notes of ‘Savage’ (their latest single) are in the fifth octave – where they don’t quite support yet. ( “Normal” )

However, I find their voices to have…a “quality” that almost make them “”sound”” more “”supported”” than the usual idols who will just flat out strain a F#5, for example. The only “variables” I can think of that would give me this “”impression”” of a “”better supported sound”” (although it isn’t) would be:

    a) an open throat
    b) a lifted soft palette
    c) vibrato

I do think the vibrato, even if not natural (it’s a little bit wobbly) since not supported, is present, but I don’t think that’s the reason I feel this way.

So I guess my question is… **Do the aespa vocalists sing with a lifted soft palette (for the most part) or do they keep their throat open, even if tension arises somewhere else (high larynx, for example)?**

    1. ningning has better and natural vibrato than most 4th gen idols. I would say Ning is consistent in C5 maybe C#5 but the best record is the low register

  8. I still visit from time to time to read your analysis, I hope to see the team back with more updates soon!
Can’t wait for you guys to get to Kihyun from Monsta X. I think he’s the first vocalist since Kyuhyun from SJ that’s really impressed and delighted me whenever I hear him sing.

  9. Mann I still remember how often I used to visit this website in its early years. I came back cause I was curious on your opinion about Oh Hyuk from Hyukoh. Like can you possible tell me your general perception on his vocal technique? Plus the kinda raspy/grinding thing he does, is that harmful.

  10. As you guys said you will analyze NCT strongest vocalists, I highly recommend Xiaojun to be included, as I personally consider him one of the strongest and best vocalists of NCT. He is the main vocalist of WayV subunit alongside Kun (which I also would recommend, but I think he is considered more of a melodic and light main vocalist instead of a strong one, but he has a great tone and very good musicality)

  11. Hi! I think you have a slight typo in the title here that you may wanna fix.

It’s actually “Vocalists *Who* Will NOT Be Analyzed” instead of “whom.” Usually I wouldn’t correct someone on this because prescriptive grammar is pointless, but I thought I would point it out, especially since it’s in the title. It’s “who” because it’s actually acting as the subject of the noun phrase “X will not be analyzed,” the subject being “who” and the verb being “be.” Since this is passive voice, it doesn’t make “who” the object, so “who” needs to be in nominative (subjective) case (as “who”).

If the phrase were “Whom we will not analyze,” whom would then be correct, as the verb of that phrase would be “analyze,” the subject would be “we,” and the object would be “whom.” Here, however, “who” is still the subject of the verb “be.” “Be analyzed” (with the not before it) is simply a verb phrase with the linking verb “be” and the participle “analyzed.”

I wouldn’t correct someone on using “who” when it “should” be “whom,” but I’m just pointing out the “incorrect” use of “whom” here for the blogger’s sake!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh that’s actually so true. I didn’t think of be as the verb and assumed it was like whom we will not analyze but indeed since who is the subject and the verb is be, who is correct. Thank you for the correction!

  12. Hey ahmin, not sure if this would count as part of her range since she is speakiing, but i came across this video of the main vocal of lightsum speaking what sounds very low, also what notes do you hear? I believe i heard a A#2, but it may have been an A#3,

  13. Hello, Ahmin. I realize you are not taking requests, but I was wondering if you could give a brief impression of the below performance. The singer, Kim Yuna, is both a solo artist and the vocalist of the modern rock band Jaurim.

  14. Also NingNing was critizised because in aespa’s performance at Coachella she wasn’t “stable” and her high notes “shaky”
I wandering what is you though about it

  17. Hi !

I have question, i know that Jimin of bts damaged his voice with his stylistic Choices, but if he learn how using his voice in a healthy and proper way can he get rid of all of the damages that he has or will he keep some sequelaes ?

    Like

    1. If he’s not gotten any serious vocal damage just a change of vocal habits should suffice, since he’s still young. If it’s too serious, he might need surgery but he’s young enough not to have a problem.

  18. Hello,

I’m not sure if you’re still doing this.
But would definitely like to know the vocal range of each Forestella member, knowing that they have a Bass to a Counter Tenor member according to their profile.

  19. Is agility entirely useless ability in rock singing? I know that Jung dongha have shown some simple but good vocal runs in his singing, but most rock singers look like having no agility at all. Sorry for my bad grammer

    Like

    1. Not entirely, but it isn’t the main focus in rock singing which is why rock singers don’t give it much thought or go out of their way to develop it. Your grammar is fine!

  20. >Interesting…As a singer, songwriter, musician myself, I know Jungkook is BTS’ MAIN Vocalist & Jimin is LEAD Vocalist for a Reason-tho Jimin’s not analyzed)?? >You seem to think less of lighter voice types, as if supported belting strength is the main criteria?…Jimin has a remarkable voice, range, flexibility + tone LIVE >saw them live 3x, up close seats..I only wish he’d dance amazingly at only 100% instead of 150%, which can affect their breathing live, sometimes. >Disappointed atthe Non-analysis +hope these aren’t biased ‘Taekook’ analysises (like the supposed ‘professional’ “Psychic Video” analysis of JK + V’s Friendship > who maliciously, sickly stated that Taekook’s ‘lovebond’?? may be in real ‘danger’ of Jimin really ‘hurting’ one of them, from ‘jealousy)!?#!@$?…Need No Response

    1. because jimina is weak asf there is no need to analyze someone as weak as him, he can’t even properly support, he strains his notes and his technique is harming
