[Ahmin] What I’ve been up to

Hi guys. I know that this blog isn’t getting as much traffic as it used because we haven’t been actively posting on it anymore. Don’t worry if you’re wondering where we went or if this is the end of us. It isn’t. Haha But it has been a while and I feel I owe you all some words, some explanations.

First I’d like to say thank you for your love and support throughout these years. It’s gotten me through a lot of rough days and made me keep moving forward. Now that’s not to say that having this blog and other stuff related to it like our Facebook page and Youtube channel isn’t great. Now I do wanna apologize and make some things official.

  1. We aren’t done, we will be back.
  2. I have not been answering video questions or audio questions because it used to take a whole half of my day to reply to everything constantly. And I’d have to be on my phone throughout the day to make sure everything was responded to as well.

So now that I’m in Korea, I’m less active on other social media and just trying to remain active on my own life. Finishing my studies, furthering my education and my experience as a vocal instructor, singer and as a person.

Once the right time comes, I shall be back to this blog. That time just isn’t now yet.

If you were wondering what I’ve been doing besides the University I’ve been attending (Sejong University btw), I’ve also been recently on two TV shows. One of them is called I’m a Trot Singer (The Trot version of I’m A Singer) in which I sang as part of the background. I’ll link the video and I come out after the 4:00 mark.

I was also recently on a TV show called TopGoal Rhapsody in which I performed a song. The show’s concept is where foreigners come out, show their talent and sing a song released between 1980 and 2010 in both Korean and translated into their own mother tongue. The translation should be done by the contestant themselves with no professional help. The song I sang was “가질 수 없는 너” or The One I Can’t Have and even though English is my most comfortable language, I had to sing the second verse in my original first language which is Portuguese.

I shall keep working hard to achieve my final goal in the end and I can’t promise I’ll come back here like it was before, but I won’t abandon this blog because it helped me a lot throughout some rough years. I also am thankful to you all.

(To people who may NOT know this: Yes, I am both a singer and a vocal instructor, just FYI. lol)

  5. I can’t believe you sang ‘The one I can’t have’! I was listening to Gummy’s version in Sugarman a few days ago but you took it to a whole new level! Your placement and openness is tremendous, not to mention you have an amazing timbre. Your voice is so beautiful. I literally cried( I feel embarrassed about that though). I wish you success and happiness! We will support you no matter no matter what you choose to do in the future 🙂 (sorry for my English, I am trying to improve)

      1. Your welcome!! You definitely have the power. Actually this is the second time you make me cry. The first was when I discovered, a few months ago, your version of ‘On my Own’. It is one of my favourite songs from musicals and you gave me goosebumps! Your tone is so pleasant and beautiful and of course your technique almost perfect! I wish you nothing but the best and I hope we will have the honor to hear you sing again in the future!

  6. Thank you Ahmin for your contributions to this blog. It’s absolutely my favorite one. Your worth waiting for and we’re all very proud of you! I wish you happiness and success in all your endeavors and I’m thrilled that your accomplishing your dreams! Though in the meantime I have to ask because, well, to be honest I’ll be a little anxious without your advice and because I don’t trust a lot of vocal instructors besides you(and Pandayeu and FrostPrincess21) Are there other good vocal instructors or at least people in the singing community who have an understanding of pedagogy and KNOW what their talking about that you would recommend?
People other than Mrskinnyjeanz,Singwise,Felicia Ricci, and Natalie Weiss because I already know and follow them. But anyone you recommend would be good I’m sure of it. ^_^

  7. Really wonderful how you are living out your aspirations! I saw the topgoal rhapsody video on your twitter and I think it’s great you could sing there. I’m so glad to hear an update about the blog because I’m very curious about more recently debuted singers or just any new material you’ll have to share.

  11. Just want to say that I really appreciate all the work you guys have put into doing these vocal analyses, it’s kind of my go-to guide when I want to see technical breakdowns of each singer’s strengths vs weaknesses, instead of the usual bickering of “my singer’s better than yours” that goes on in fandom.

I hope you are doing well on your break, and I can’t wait to see more updates once you are ready to come back! (Looking particularly forward to seeing your analysis of Kihyun from Monsta X, and maybe Shownu as well if you’ve got the time.) It’s definitely understandable that you want to focus on other things in your life for now, and I really enjoyed your performance!

  14. hi i dont know if you are still here read comment or not i just want to know your opinion about 4th gen male vocal who in your opinion is the best of them and i dont know if you know jongho or not i want to know your opinion about his vocal

      1. I don’t know if he’s the best, but ONEWE’s Yonghoon stood out to me, at least he’s the best I know of?

In this video, he showcases nice lower range, well supported mix (albeit pushed around G4) and a supported head voice. I can’t think of any other 4th gen vocalist who has accomplished this.

      2. Yonghoon is a very well rounded vocalist but he’s not 4th gen.

his group debuted originally under the name MAS 0094 in 2015 and they redebuted as ONEWE in 2019 with RBW…. if they had had member changes i wouldn’t mind saying that they’re 4th gen but the members are exactly the same, the only thing that changed was their name and company

that beginning was absolutely beautiful he’s got great dynamics on top of a good head voice wow. he was singing in head voice up to a G4 range throughout the song and i would call all of it supported. ive heard him support his head voice higher too.

he mixes quite a few G4’s starting from 3:10 onwards and yes i’d say they’re supported but pushed. at 3:13 he sings a very well supported F4 (MA-raio)
        at 3:50 he mixes C5 – D5 – Eb5 and they’re very strained but that’s not surprising

he has the same pushing issues as the mamamoo ladies. it seems like rbw loves collecting chesty vocalists lol. i think purple kiss goeun is on the chesty side too so yeah

if you consider him 4th gen then he’s by far the best out of the male vocalists yeah but i still say he’s 3rd gen

      3. I am aware he debuted as MAS0094 member lol I guess it really depends whether you want to consider MAS0094 his debut or ONEWE. I’d say ONEWE, because that’s like his official “K-Pop” debut under an official company (MAS0094 was managed by the ModernK music academy), but that’s just my point of view.
Yonghoon has some supported C5s (there’s that one Jannabi cover, and also in Go Now he supported a C5) but I don’t think C5s are consistent enough for him, he thins out on them very often, like in Eraser performances. He’s got B4 tho imo, the highest in the performance I linked was a nice head placed Bb4
3:50 I’d say that’s a mask placed head voice with like… an awkward vowel lmao
What I’d be curious about is whether Ahmin would consider his E4-G4s pushed resonance?

        Like

      4. the generational debate is off topic tbh but if you consider him 4th gen then yes he’s by far the best in that gen

oh i didn’t catch that head voice bb4, would you mind timestamping it?

honestly you might be right about that 3:50 im not too sure myself. it doesn’t help that dongmyeong is straining in the background lol. it’s still pretty tight nonetheless especially when he ascends to the D5 and Eb5

        Like

      5. The Bb4 is at 2:47 🙂
tbh I’m pretty sure it’s mask placed head voice, Yonghoon kinda likes to shape his vowels so his head voice sounds similar to mixed voice in the 5th octave, especially on vowel that are not “oo” or “ee”. You can listen to the covers of Lucky Strike or If I Don’t Have You, for example, or there’s this high head voice part towards the end of Regulus. Those are all examples of Yonghoon’s habit (?) to go for a mask placed head voice in the 5th octave and shape the vowels to make it resemble a mix to kind of show off lmao If he stopped doing that, or rather making it so tense through his vowel shaping, he’d easily support higher than B4, he’s already got nice placement all the way to F#5.

      6. ah yes thanks, but are you sure it’s a Bb4? im catching a B4 – G#4 sequence not a Bb4. anyways it sounds supported too

        Like

      7. I’m sure it’s a Bb4. The song is in Eb major, and the note Yonghoon sang on that timestamp was in the diatonic scale of Eb major, so there’s no doubt it’s a Bb4 and not a B4

      8. thats actually very convincing lol i have no reason to doubt you
my pitch seems a little off these days

im gonna be a bit sneaky and ask u if u mind answering the question i made a few days ago on yerin baek’s analysis? its fine if u dont want to or if youre not sure, but i made that question a few days ago and its still unanswered lol and you seem to know more than the average person here.
