  1. thanks for the video man, i’ve been wondering for a while what an octave was haha btw not related but i read in your comments that you analyze half of the vocalist of a group unless there is many talented singers in it, so I was wondering if you are planning to analyze gikwang or dongwoo from beast, cause from what i’ve heard they are pretty much at the same level as hyung seung. I’m a big fan of gikwangs voice so I wonder what you think of it:p

    1. Oh hi there! Well we only analyze more vocalists if they’re more than average and Hyunseung himself was only average. Unfortunately both Dongwoo and Kikwang would end up as weak, so we won’t analyze them. I apologize for that. Kikwang has a nice voice, it’s just his skill that needs to be polished up.

      2. Do I have a favorite group? Mhmm I used to really love ChoColat but they’re on indefinite hiatus/or disbanded… and I really like SNSD/SHINee because I’m from an older generation of K-pop fans, I’ve known K-pop since they debuted so yeah. Group-wise, that’s who I like. Soloists, I like BoA, Ailee and Shannon a lot for idols. It’s on our Team page actually haha

      3. i never heard of chocolat so i searched them up, man they’re gorgeous, and most of them mixed, quite the unique group, i’ll look more into them! btw man I just recently got into singing, like very recently, so when i hear a song i’ve no idea what notes they are singing on, is there like a website where they show video along with notes? or do you have any tips to identifying notes?

      4. I mean you don’t have to do that, but using the seventh string tuner and singing along or using a piano.

  2. You know, I was just getting into K-pop when Good Day became popular (IU was the first artist that I liked) but I really got confused with the 3-octave note. Because, like you said, oct- means 8. Thanks for clarifying this! always helpful 🙂

  3. Omg dang what a mistranslation LOL if an octave were three notes I’d be set to play every piece ever with my baby hands! I also wanted to just tell you how adorable you are! So adorable ;u;

  4. Off-topic question. I hope you still answer it T^T

    I’m trying to make a vocal analysis of Taylor Swift and I saw this video. Her F#5 @1:38, is it head voice or a squeeze falsetto? I’m doubting it because her falsetto is normally airy, and this one is not.

    Thanks.

  5. When I started to really interest me to Kpop, I fall in love with you ^^ ! And I knew knothing about technique, I read “3octaves” and I was like “isnt it just 3 notes ‘-‘?!” but since I knew nothing about technique, I thought I was wrong…
    Today I begin to know a lot about the singing technique, I know IU lack of technique but I’m still in love with her ahah her singing is like “emotion” for me, her style take me away ^^! Anyway, I’m happy I found you video because although I understood long ago that it was not 3 octaves, now I understand better the explanation!

  6. I love how you use Mariah’s songs as examples haha ❤

    Nice video, I didn't even know people thought that about IU's notes.

  7. Hey Ahmin! I was wondering, in general, how come some vocalists who (like Mariah Carey) had great understanding and skill when it comes to vocal technique can still deteriorate so much?

    1. We would appreciate it if you wouldn’t make multiple accounts so your post can get noticed, it’s kind of childish don’t you think? We see all the comments, be patient.

      Anyway to answer your question:
      Your vocal folds are muscles and therefor are subject to fatigue and deterioration due to overuse and really aging. Think of it like this; an Olympic runner can still pull muscle even though their running technique is almost perfect also an Olympic runner who is 46 will not have as toned muscles as an Olympic that is in their early 20s. Having a good technique helps preserve the voice, but it doesn’t stop the voice from aging and it also doesn’t stop your voice from feeling overworked.

      1. I’m sorry if it looked like I was trying to spam, I actually didn’t mean to post multiple comments. When I first tried (just using my email) it redirected me to sign into my WordPress account after which I thought my original comment did not get posted so I did it again. I had no doubt you guys would reply quickly since you always do.

    1. My goal is to help professional vocalists as much as I can, around the world if possible, to become better. I don’t wish to be an idol, I am quite satisfied with being a vocal instructor but I appreciate your compliments.
