- Lower register: Very well developed and improved, tone has gotten much fuller in the lower extremes of the voice and even below his supported range, tone in the lower range is still present even though it might sit outside his tessitura, his support isn’t completely gone.
- Mixed register: His mixed voice is generally more on the balanced or head-dominant side at times, it’s very well controlled and very well supported, with consistent resonance and is able to extend with support even above his supported range.
- Upper register: Weakest of his register, but far from being a weak register. Able to produce a connected head voice with support and clarity up to Eb5 ~ F5 consistently but shows issues in keeping an opened throat and a completely closed and connected position in his vocal cords above F5.
Agility
Possessing not only a light lyric voice, but also a mixed voice technique that relies on a slightly lighter vocal cord function, by employing more cricothyroid muscles in his mixed voice, Kyuhyun is able to retain a better approach on his vocal runs by executing them without carrying too much weight with his chest voice and using a more balanced and head dominant sound that make his voice less pushed, more relaxed and more flexible. In terms of vocal agility, Kyuhyun possesses agility but lacks the actual control in his voice, in other words, his vocal runs are often well separated and have the correct rhythmic “bounce” that allows them to flow better, but he lacks the precision and the control to execute more complex vocal runs, such as the attempts in “Hot Times” and “My Everything“. Even then, when it comes to more mid-tempo or slow tempo vocal runs, he has more or less mastered the correct muscle memory and coordination to properly execute less complex vocal runs and trills.
Overall analysis
A later addition to Super Junior, a member who was not trained by Yoo Youngjin in the classical trademark sound of most SM vocalists, Kyuhyun is a member of groups such as Super Junior, Super Junior-M,Super Junior K.R.Y. and SM The Ballad. He often gets praise in his singing and is usually marketed not only as a main vocalist but also as a skilled ballad singer who can take on the more challenging parts of a large variety of repertoire. Even though it’s been promoted by SM that the KRY members are compromised of a bass, Kyuhyun, a tenor, Ryeowook, and a baritone, Yesung, they’re all tenors. Kyuhyun’s voice sits more comfortably in a higher tessitura and lacks the weight and darkness of many other voices. He may be classically trained into a different fach, but with his current style and technique his voice would most likely be classified as a light lyric tenor.
From the bottom of his range, he has come a long way with improving the tone, support and development of his lower range. While most vocalist rely heavily on high notes and straining as high as they can, Kyuhyun hasn’t only focused on developing his voice as to not strain it, he also keeps his voice from losing tone below Eb3/D3, as the average K-pop tenor would. Instead Kyuhyun has worked to improve his lower range, when compared to back in the day with “Smile“. His lower range now retains a full and forward tone, even as low as B2 such as in “모창“, with consistency, support and clarity. He’s able to vocalize in the lowest extremes of his range even though he might lose support, he has developed his voice well so that his tone is still present even on G2’s and A2’s, such as in “광화문에서“. His support however truly only starts around Bb2 and B2, where his projection becomes much clearer and his voice truly shows its color and character, such as the C3’s in “사랑했지만“.
His strongest and most well developed register however, is his mixed voice. Naturally a voice shoots up and is often highlighted in the higher extremes of it but his technique is such that even when he sings higher, he maintains good vocal stamina and technique. He has improved a lot since his first audition back in 2005, where his voice would show support but also lots of nasality, tongue tension and closeness with “인형“. However so, contrasting not only a more recent performance of “인형“, but also even compared to his singing back in 2007 with “달뱅이“, Kyuhyun has not only worked to minimize tension, he has been able to develop his voice in order to truly control the openness, the power, the resonance and the support so that he’s now able to produce true resonance at any given time, with a well sized projection and good volume throughout his voice. He not only is able to produce consistent resonance in his mixed range, such as in on G#4 in his “Solo” in concert and “악몽“, A4’s in “사랑했지만” and “Robin Hood” and numerous sustained Bb4’s that contrasted with TVXQ!’s Changmin’s straining, show a much cleaner vocal approach with a kind of resonance that in that case more or less drowned out his singing in “Bolero” in numerous “occasions“. This kind of singing isn’t accidental nor lucky, Kyuhyun is able to keep this support, clarity of tone with consistency and has happened since 2011 in performances of “기억의 습작” that can be compared to more “recent performances” of the same song, where his resonance, control and support are almost impeccable.
Even when approaching a range above Bb4, Kyuhyun does not lose in terms of support and consistency and has shown many times that he’s able to produce resonance consistently even up to B4 such as in “가장무도회” and “Islands“, but even when singing outside his supported range, he can consistently keep good vocal placement even if tension might happen above B4, such as in some C5’s in “Hot Times” but also other times when not sustaining notes, his support and resonance are present even up to C5, such as in “사랑이 이렇게“. The consistency of this is arguable due to Kyuhyun singing less above Bb4 live and usually staying in a more C3 ~ Bb4 range when singing live or solo, such as shown by his vocal range showcased in his solo mini album. Kyuhyun’s mastery of good vocal placement and resonance isn’t the only thing good about his mixed voice, but also being able to control the dynamics of his voice with such delicacy and his mixing being so well balanced that he can choose when to carry more or less chest voice into it depending on his dynamic approach to songs, showing true control of his instrument such as in “7년간의 사랑“. His range above C5 shows inconsistency issues but he has shown numerous times the ability to support his notes in studio in the fifth octave, peaking at an Eb5 in studio.
Having a connected and developed voice is almost a must for a skilled vocalist and Kyuhyun is not one to fail in that department either. Although it being his weakest register, Kyuhyun has shown that he is a vocalist capable of not only producing a connected and relaxed head voice, he’s able to support it and keep a good vocal placement with the head up to about D5, as shown in his C5’s in “Loving You“, “마법의 성” and in “The One I Love” which have improved to a more opened sound as shown in more recent “performances” of the song, but also in his D5’s in “Nothing Better“. His connection and support are still present even above D5, but there’s a lack of consistency with placement, although he was able to produce a more relaxed head placed sound up to F5 in Nothing Better, at times he will opt for a more mask placed sound in his Eb5 ~ F5 range losing a bit of the resonance of his head voice and control of volume and sound. He seems to lack the full grasp of a developed head voice at this point in time and above F#5 shows a more falsetto-like tone and seems to lack control in keeping the vocal cords connected together and his support in place, even if still able to produce a head voice. His head voice also, although connected, lacks a true sense of full head resonance and at times becomes a bit weak in volume, showing a lack of development in this register compared to the rest of his voice, which is also indicated by how much less explored and used this part of his voice is in comparison to the rest. His transitions are also well done and even if a gap may happen and an issue with pitch occurs, he’s able to get back into his usual control, such as in “My Everything“.
Vocally and musically speaking, Kyuhyun not only possesses good vocal technique but he’s got a very good ear for understanding how to deliver a song with the true essence of the music behind it, being able to choose when to be powerful, when to hold back and use a more airy quality to his voice and even keep a more closed or opened sound. His voice tends to lack the gritty and more raspy/throaty aspects of say a rock singer, but he still shows the ability to adapt his voice to many genres of music. He is a vocalist who produces a slightly fast vibrato but with good support and a natural approach, as opposed to a larynx, tongue or jaw based vibrato most of the time. At times he opts to sing with a laryngeal vibrato, causing his tone to become overly fast and somewhat shaky. He also has a good ear for pitch and even if he does go off, he tries his best to stay in key and will quickly adjust back to the pitch of the song, even if he is to be thrown off by someone else who might sing off pitch, he’ll try his best to get back into key, such as in this duet of “A Whole New World” with Charice Pempegco, where she goes sharp but Kyuhyun, although slightly sharp, tries to bring them back into the key center of the song.
A vocalist who not only possesses a mastery of his vocal technique at a young age, but also has shown good improvement over the years, Kyuhyun is set on a path to being not only a good vocalist, but also a good musician, professional and consistent entertainer who responsibly takes care of his instrument and is able to develop it well to the best of his ability. For further improvement, working to truly grasp the concept of head voice and explore risks with his voice, Kyuhyun has only good things set for him in his future, when it comes to singing. Although overshadowed by other vocalists who might have better stage presence than him, or who might have more popular voices, he is by far the strongest male idol vocalist in SM and in the current K-pop music industry, when it comes to technique.
Musicianship
Vocally and musically, Kyuhyun shows excellence in developing his voice as far as he can. An area where he might lack in terms of ability is when it comes to taking real risks with his voice. He is a very respectful vocalist who doesn’t try to oversing by adding excessive note changes to song or trying sing over other people without needing to. He knows how to balance his voice well when harmonizing with others. He has over the years grown to show not only that when given the chance, he is able to take on the skill of improvisation, such as in an improvised ballad version of “Sorry Sorry“, as well as taking the freedom to add different sustained notes and melodic changes, even if subtle, to his performances such as in the “Ballad Medley” and “Isn’t She Lovely“. Even then, this skill still isn’t fully explored and isn’t as developed as the rest of his voice, which may happen due to a lack of confidence and also musical choices of wanting to stick to the original song.

No shrill is not a good thing, what I mean is that his voice sounds comfortable in a lower range but the higher he sings, the more “alive” his voice sounds, it brightens up, it becomes stronger, it becomes more resonant as he goes up in range. Shrillness or sharpness are not usually positive terms.

I really don’t feel comfortable doing that. What I meant was that Lena Park’s mixed register would shoot her up to a Competent to Good vocalist or Competent if all her other registers were equally developed, but they’re much more developed than her mix.

This is a pretty amazing blog in my opinion and kudos to all the writers/analysts.
Just like most, am no expert on music, I just listen and enjoy. I do not understand Korean, would not have even known what kpop means nor anything “k-something” less than a year ago. By pure accident several months ago, I clicked on a youtube video of a supposed music video of a kdrama (I also did not know what kdrama meant at that time). And not understanding a word of the song, I was just struck by how good the singer sounded to me. Obviously I googled the singer and that is how I got to “know” Kyuhyun, which eventually led me to this blog.
I read all the analyses, taught me a lot. You guys really want to impart your knowledge in music – very admirable. Thanks!

thanks! am afraid am too old tho’ to pay attention to kpop 🙂 – will turn 60 in a few years. somehow kyuhyun’s singing, however, struck a chord. now i have all his songs that are available in itunes and sometimes listen to them when i go jogging. what i discovered is this – i seem to have a different appreciation of the melody and the voice because i do not understand the lyrics for most part 🙂
and i find that it is helpful to encourage people when you believe that they are doing a good job – especially in this digitized / instant / social networking world. so, you are doing a good job – keep it up! 🙂

Awww we’ve been getting little to no hate this year on the blog itself but twitter can be a trickier story haha Thank you so much! ^ ^ The runs are kind of messy throughout, the 2:42 note sounded like C#5 and the 4:04 seemed like C5, the C5 was more relaxed, less pushed. Both sounded like they had a bit of a high larynx. Kyuhyun sounds fine for the most part, actually. The only problem is the runs really. He phrases A4’s really easily, it’s really nice to hear.

Hello Ahmin! In his last performant of Mozart, Kyuhyun mentioned that the hospital said he had a lump (vocal nodules?) on his vocal cords and he had to take a shot and medication to sing through it. Do you think that would damage his vocal health, and if continuing to sing as much as he does these days without dealing with “the lump” would affect his range and voice?

I heard about that. A lump could be vocal nodules but it may possibly just be vocal polyps. He could get either of those by using proper technique but not being healthy enough, so not resting, not hydrating his voice, overworking and such. It is possible he overworked himself which created a lump, which may be polyps. Nodules usually require surgery, but polyps just need a little bit of rest to go away. Not totally sure, so here’s more info on it.

This has been discussed a couple of times in the comment section of this analysis.
“He whispered a bit in the beginning but even the quieter C#3’s were supported and connected. 2:23 laryngeal vibrato, visible. 2:50 yeah that was nice, around Eb3, very nice and forward. That wasn’t very low and many male idols can produce similar fulness that low. 3:01 That could be more opened, but it’s well placed. 3:07 another well placed note, resonant but could be more opened in the back of his throat. I think some people get a chance to sing more vocal songs on KoMS, but they tend to sound about the same to me as they do on their best performances elsewhere. I’ve heard similar things from Ken, Kangin and Kyuhyun outside KoMS.”
To compare it to Hyoshin’s version is hard because Kyuhyun’s version is sung in a lower key than the original. While the range for the original is Eb3 ~ Db5, Kyuhyun’s is C#3 ~ B4 which, although still quite challenging, makes these two versions hard to compare. Kyuhyun did really well in this key and he lowers the key of this song everytime he sings it for one simple reason, because he knows his upper mix isn’t as powerful and holding that C5 at the end of the bridge would be too intense for him, since his mix becomes lighter above Bb4 and he lacks evenness although support is present.

It’s me with the vocal nodule questions again… It’s been confirmed that he has vocal nodules here (http://entertain.naver.com/read?oid=311&aid=0000642673&gid=999339&cid=1021045) and will have to rest for 2-3 weeks. Given that he did sing through his vocal nodules for a short period of time and the fact that he’s granted a break of 2-3 weeks (only? I have no clue…), do you think he can make a full recovery without any impact on his range and technique?

Well, it has nothing to do with his technique; it has to do with the fact that he has been actively using his voice for quite some time now. Kyuhuun has released many solo vocal material, participated in musicals as well as participated in singing competition many of which were in quick succession of each other, not to mention Radio Star. He has been busy. The vocal folds are, in fact, muscles and like also muscles they can be exhausted, overused, and become fatigued and simply that’s what happened. Think of it like this, although track stars regularly use their leg muscles building up the muscle and train their running technique to perfection they can still sprain their ankle and pull a muscle while running and have to take a mandatory rest, essentially this is what Kyuhyun is going through.

A light lyric is a different division of a lyric. If you meant full lyric, his voice lacks the darkness/mature quality of a full lyric voice.

We may be using different names to refer to the same voice type. There are variations on names. If you mean a high tenor vs a lyric tenor like song wise would put it, then high tenor refers to light lyric and lyric is full lyric, in the terms we use.

The highest portion of his mix is underdeveloped muscle wise so he lacks strength and muscle stability, as well as power/volume when he sings higher. He wouldn’t be able to sustain higher notes, which does come with being a lighter voice.

I’ll answer only because I am somewhat familiar with her. Charice Pemepegco has matured into what I believe would be most likely classified as a mezzo soprano. She tends to sing with a lot of tongue tension and a pushed down larynx, even in her lower range. She’s had some nice moments of support even down to E3, but her mix becomes really throaty, shouty and pushed even around Bb4. I’ve heard some occasional good moments up to C5 perhaps when she was younger, but never consistently. Most filipina vocalists try to imitate western vocalists, particularly those of african american descent. They do it by pushing their larynxes down with their tongues rolled back, which makes their voices sound much thicker than they naturally are, so they sound forced and pushed. All this causes a lot of tension. Charice would not be rated anywhere above average if even that high. I’m not sure she’s even able to produce resonance without tension.

Ahmin, I really want to ask this question. First, do Spintos always start mixing at C#4 or maybe a bit higher? My second question is, after studying up on Sandeul a bit, he can sustain various B4s, and I was wondering if he had better muscle strength there than Kyuhyun, who is headier? My third question is how good are your F#4s and G4s right now? Do you ever feel tempted to exit your supported range? Also, I saw your range is close to 4 octaves, a little more chest muscle development in the lower range and you’ll have the full 4.

Spinto tenors share the passaggi as full lyric tenors. I think Sandeul has more strength but improper muscle coordination caused by over usage of air pressure. My F#4s? Good, they’re doing well thank you for asking. lol My phrased G4s are well too. What do you mean exit my supported range?

It’s hard to give it a number of hours, days or months. It really depends. It’s just going on each individual and working on your own process.

He said that his vocal nodules had been bothering for 4-5 years and he couldn’t sing in falsetto/head voice and now he can. Could that be why his head voice was unstable?

It could, yes because the vocal nodules do create a lack of smoothness and closure for the vocal cords, which can make it harder to produce certain notes in your range. Well he might if he is aware that he wants to, I mean he already has developed it to an extent and shown improvement, so I can only expect good things of him.

1:04 The A2 wasn’t bad, a bit pushed but not bad. 1:54 a bit flat around this line. 2:07 beautiful G4, clean resonance, very well controlled. I like this picture of him too actually. lol He didn’t do the key change where he’d belt A4’s, he stayed on G4’s which sound great so this in general sounds like the same Kyuhyun we know and love.

It was an Eb5, it was mask placed, slightly pushed. I’m not sure if it was mixed, it sounded like mask placed head voice to me but the transition was really quick and well done, the note could’ve been more relaxed and opened.

Ah ok, but before that he said something like before treatment, he couldn’t use his head voice/falsetto well and give some example of that (from 0:19 to 0:24). So is that part not as good as the 0:30 note or sth? (The 0:30 is his example of his head voice/falsetto after treatment)

1:01 G4, yeah that’s the right note but I wouldn’t call that pushing at all. It’s a bit too airy and he’s singing on a closed vowel, so the note is not nearly as good as it could be, but it’s not bad either.

I mean proper technique is something that usually becomes second nature, so even when you’re goofing around, you would have at least a basis and be able to sing with decent technique if you know what you’re doing. 0:25 ~ 0:50 He might not be singing on a stage, but he is doing everything correctly except his vowels could be more opened. Awww thank you for asking, that’s sweet of you. I am well, how are you? 2:21 There’s a harmony where Kyuhyun hit A4 with a more falsetto like head voice and his partner hit C#5 with more head voice. Kyuhyun’s note isn’t as easy to hear. 2:45 G4’s is all that Kyuhyun is hitting, 2:54 he goes up to A4, the vibrato is the only thing I’m not really happy about with that part. Everything else is fine, generally his partner is doing the higher harmonies. 3:53 I heard Bb4 for Kyuhyun, more head voice like and a harmonized D5 for his partner, who was using more falsetto then and lost his projection. 3:40 that was just G4, it sounded good. I mean these notes aren’t really challenging for him. Actually his partner can get tight on a few vowels like Oh and Aye, 2:25 but he supports G4 and F#4, he has good placement, he has a nice voice. He is not a bad vocalist at all. He is also good at harmonizing.

You mean the low notes? I am not sure I would count it because it is just pure vocal fry for a lot of the notes that are below the 1st octave of the piano. Actually I’m not sure, maybe B1 I count, but that’s me personally and this could be very arguable.

Hello ahmin, was Kyuhyun’s Bb4 at 3:06 supported ?
I think his high note was very well-supported at first, but from 3:08 I can hear strange distored quality a in his voice, and from 3:09 I can hear that the sound seemed to stuck inside his throat, it was not well-projected. Of course, all of these things just happened a little bit in his high note. The G#4 before that high note sounded more supported.

Around 21:30 he said his throat wasn’t in good condition that day. You’re overthinking, he sounded just a bit phlegmy but his technique is fine, he may be slightly tired but he was relaxed and supported. He wasn’t singing anything challenging.

Well unsupported airiness sounds really thin, shallow, a bit throaty, and supported airiness still has a lot more tone quality, it’s a bit rounder and you can also tell when you hear the vocalist doing it on purpose by comparing it to other songs.

I’m listening to Kyuhyun’s new album today (not just the two singles and the OST but the rest). He’s put more falsetto in this song, “Fall in You,” as a chorus, more than in the Celebration single (I haven’t listened to the entire Celebration album, which as a fan I feel guilty about), even though I *own* the album at home, I haven’t opened it.) I’m feeling that it is more free and resonant, a little bit more agile, maybe. He sounds more connected up there to me, brighter, maybe even happier, somehow. Could be just the song being lighthearted, but it feels confident.

Compare this not just to the studio version of Celebration, but this live performance earlier this year, before his rest period. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMvGfvpy_xk He sounds a little airy and it seemed he initially strained in trying to reach those notes, although he did some. He was able to hit them inconsistently.
I’m looking forward to see if he performs Fall in You live, before he goes off for military service next year. Those videos in the earlier comments showing his improved head voice, it really is brighter and bigger dynamically than I’ve heard him do in many years. It’s closer to the brightness that Max Changmin has used (not comparing them, only the brightness)

To me, I’m only hearing just a bit less aspiration on the upper notes and a bit less tightness but it’s not a huge difference, it’s a very specific live performance where he only had one chance to sing versus a studio track where he had many takes and chances to redo it, so to me it was about taking good breaths beforehand and whatnot. It’s not much of a development difference, it’s a difference of taking breaths beforehand. But yes he is becoming more confident in his upper range.
