Vocal Range
C#3 ~ G#5 (2 octaves, 3 notes and 1 semitone)
Supported Range
E3 ~ Bb4/B4
Voice Type
Mezzo-Soprano
Strengths/Achievements
- Possibly and arguably the strongest vocalist in YG entertainment presently
- Able to keep tone and support down to E3 consistently
- Possesses a very agile voice, with good note separation
- Resonance is present in the voice from time to time
- Able to keep consistent support in her voice up until Bb4/B4
- Notes in falsetto are controlled for the most part
- Pitch is consistently controlled in her voice
- Musicianship is very prominent in her singing
- Mixed voice is bright and more head dominant, so there’s less strain on the vocal cords
Points for Improvement
- Although voice is agile, runs lack precision in pitch
- Notes below E3 lack support and tone, although they’re still audible and not airy
- Resonance is not often achieved
- Notes above B4 are often produced with tension and strain
- Falsetto register is weak in terms of tone production and isn’t often used
- Voice is very young and could easily change, so some of the vocally heavy songs she sings can damage her voice
- Mixed voice is not very flexible and lacks tone and control
- Notes above C#5 can often sound unstable, tight and screechy
- Vowels such as Woo (우), Eu (으) and Aye (애) cause her swallowing muscles to close her throat
Registers
- Lower register: Able to support down to E3 consistently with an even column of sound, through proper breathing and a neutral larynx position. Notes below E3, however, generally become more quiet and less connected, with a slight hint of airiness and less projection, although tone is still present.
- Mixed register: Normally a very balanced to head-dominant mix is used where her voice sounds youthful and bright for most of the time. Support is present up until B4, with resonance and consistency up until Bb4. Above B4, notes become more screeched and pushed.
- Upper register: Most underused register, where her voice becomes the weakest and lacks projection. Her voice still possesses enough control of pitch to freely carry out vocal runs even in this register.
Agility
Lee Hi’s voice is a bit heavier than most other K-pop female idol vocalists, which doesn’t stop her from having, arguably, one of the most agile voices amongst her peers. She is able to carry out complicated and smooth vocal runs from the bottom to the top of her range with precision and accuracy of pitch and a very clean and consistent separation of each individual note. Her precision is generally good but at times her runs may come out of place and will contain some extra notes that can sound off-key and miscalculated. Most examples of her precision in vocal runs include her cover of “Love“, “Killing Me Softly“, “Mama Do“. She can either go off key when she’s brought outside of her supported range, like in “Sway“, or when the runs are too improvised or require too wide of a range like in the last run of “Goodbye Baby Goodbye“.
Overall analysis
Lee Hi is arguably one of the idols with one of the most unique voices in K-pop. That uniqueness doesn’t necessarily come from her vocal tone or her vocal quality, but instead it comes from the fact that, even at such a young age, her voice stands out by being one of the few Mezzo-Sopranos amongst young female idols singers. Her voice generally possesses a very dark, soulful and womanly quality in her lower range, but the youthfulness of her voice due to age and her mixing technique show that she still has a developing voice, most likely at this point in time she’d be classified as a Light Lyric Mezzo-Soprano.
Possessing one of the best lower ranges amongst young idol vocalists, she has the advantage of having a naturally lower voice than most other k-pop female vocalists, which allows for her voice to fully project and be connected even as she descends into the lower third octave. Her voice is characteristically very smoky and dark in her lower range, where she possesses a very clean, supported and projected sound, well placed in her mask and her chest, allowing for her voice to fully be present even in her lowest notes. She’s able to keep a consistent full sound on F#3’s, such as in “너를 위해“, F3’s such as in “U-Go Girl” and E3 such as at the end of an acapella cover of “Mercy” and in “Let It Be“. Her voice however starts losing her natural column of sound as she descends below E3, such as her Eb3’s in “시간이 흐른뒤” and “All I Want For Christmas Is You“, and her D3’s in “Officially Missing You” and “U-Go Girl“. Although she may be able to take her voice below D3, presently, her voice still only shows support on E3 and above.
Her mixed range shows a very distinct and almost light quality to it, which betrays the sense of soulfulness and heaviness present in her lower range. Due to her young age, her voice still lacks the maturity to fully connect from bottom to top with a consistent color and timbre, which is also a technical flaw due to the nature of her mixed voice. Lee Hi’s mixed voice is generally either balanced, or head dominant, which allow for her to peak at F5, even with as a mezzo-soprano, numerous times, such as in “Mercy” and “U-Go Girl“. Her voice is head-dominant but still has the right amount of chest voice for her muscles to properly be able to coordinate and control her mixed voice and allow for her to bring it up to F5. The issue however, is that due to the lightness of her mixed voice, it lacks the necessary strength from the chest voice muscles to create a fuller and bigger sound as she ascends, also taking away the natural qualities of a mezzo-soprano as she ascends, although age is also a factor to be considered. Therefore, resonance may be present in her singing, but it’s generally kind of small in comparison to the potential size of her voice, as it matures. However she has been able to show quite a couple of times the ability to be resonant on A4’s, such as in “Whistle“, and her Bb4’s in “Rolling In The Deep” and”Goodbye Baby Goodbye“. Her support is still present on B4, such as in “Let It Go” and “Love The Way You Lie“, but above B4, her C5’s generally carry a bit of a tight throat and even on B4’s, due to the vowels being either “Aye (애)”, “Woo (우)” and “Eu (으)”, her swallowing muscles tend to close around her belts, even within her supported range. Examples of strained high notes above B4 include the C5’s in “나는 달라” and “살아봤으면 해 (If I Were You)“, her D5’s in “Mercy” and “Let It Be“, and her Eb5 in “Sway“, where her voice generally sounds quite tight and screeched.
Her falsetto register is by far her least developed register, where her voice becomes the weakest and the least comfortable. Her voice is still quite controlled and she’s able to freely do vocal runs even in her falsetto, such as in “Mercy” and “Let It Be“, but her voice lacks the full connection of her vocal cords to produce a less airy tone. Her falsetto also is limited in range, where her highest note is a belted F5, her falsetto is mostly not used above Eb5, an F5 is hit in the recording of “All I Want For Christmas Is You“, but her voice is just less supported and less capable of the natural sustain she possesses in the rest of her other registers. Projection may be present, but her placement isn’t ideally put into her mask and head voice, instead her voice is generally only half-placed in her mask, where the other half is placed slightly in the back of her throat and the rest is lost through the air coming out of her vocal cords.
As a young vocalist, Lee Hi’s biggest assets are her naturally low voice, her developed lower range and her ease in her mixed range. Another one of her strengths is her pitch which, apart from occasional vocal runs, is mostly impeccable and allows her to actually sing very complicated vocal lines at will and with freedom. Her voice is always in control of her pitch, her breathing is very steady and she possesses a very advanced understanding of music. Always being able to change the music at will with different accompaniments, she knows where to use stronger notes and to properly add her own character such as in “Lonely” and “어른아이“. She also generally uses a straight tone but has a natural and healthy vibrato, which only add to how advanced her vocal technique is considering her young age.
Due to being cast as a vocalist and singer from K-Pop Star, she didn’t go through the training that most YG vocalists normally would, allowing for her to develop her technique, style and persona on her own, not being influenced by the vocal coaching present in YG Entertainment. As a vocalist, she is a young prodigy whose vocal technique surpass the vocal technique of many of her older and younger seniors, where she’s able to control her voice beyond her years. For future improvements, developing her head voice and further developing her mixed voice to properly add to the natural soulful depth and color of her low voice would be a must, however it may take time due to the current vocal care she’s under, where little to no emphasis is put on developing proper vocal technique. However, due to her naturally good vocal habits, Lee Hi should have no issues with her present vocal technique.
Musicianship
Probably her strongest quality, Lee Hi is a vocalist who not only hears music well, but is also able to add and make every song her own with vocal runs and melodic changes. She has the natural ear and ability to fully adapt to many different kinds of backgrounds and settings, where her voice shows control and precision in her musical ideas. Examples include the many covers she’s performed, where her confidence has risen and her control even more so throughout the years, such as in “Bust Your Windows“, “Lonely“, “Let It Be“, “Let It Go” and “Love The Way You Lie“. Her ability to harmonize and produce clean and well balanced performances is also an asset of hers, such as in “Officially Missing You“, “Goodbye Baby Goodbye” and “Mama Do“.

Oh my, i’m very suprised she’s above average to competent! Yeah a YG vocalist that’s over above average! Sorry I thought she was average to above average. Just in the YG world lol. She’s defintley a solid vocalist. Very good anaylsis. Do you think that if she improves falsetto she can be competent? Is my sexy man next for vocal anaylsis?

Wow, it looks really good and I see those pictures on google. I’m so happy this iste is getting more popular I tell my friends about it all the time and they call me the music wizard. They say I know WAY more stuff than my music/singing teacher in school. I’m so happy people start realizing what really a weak, average, above average, comptent, good, great and excellrnt vocalist is. I mean just tell the truth, yeah sometimes I say your a good singer to people to make them feel good but when you judge the right way it’s a whole different thing. Hard work pays off and you did well! I wish I can give you money for this site because I would really give it to you. If I see you I would just give you money right away

Well she’s bad at singing lol. She tries to make class really fun but does not pay attention to the actual way we sound and should sing. I hate it so much. Girls do not know how to sing with head voice and the only soprano you can hear is me. All the sopranos admit it to. They sound so airy and like mice. The tenors don’t sing they lip sync. There are only like 10 altos while there are like 50 sopranos and you can barely hear the altos. The baritones are the loudest but ther is like 5 of them. The only people you can hear is me and the baritones. And there is over 150 people in my chorus!

She gets the boost for being a mezzo, so even though Bb4/B4 aren’t very high, she’s a mezzo so it’s high in her voice. Plus with that musicianship and that low range, she deserves to be slightly higher than just Above Average too. I think she’d need to improve her mix actually first and her resonance. You mean Changmin? Nope not yet. lol

As in 너를 위해? The Ballad? Actually now that you mention, I believe she hit an F5 in that song, if not at least Eb5 a couple of times. There was absolutely nothing nearly as high as Eb6 though ._. Do you have a specific time stamp where you heard this note?

Sorry typo. It is a 5. What do you think of the projection though. That is a pretty high note to belt . If she can belt that high her pure head voice should be higher? Which is her best live performance do you think?
LikeLike
Well yeah whenever she goes above B4, she gets quite screechy but she can mix really high considering her voice type. Yes her pure head voice should be higher but she doesn’t really show much head voice, only falsetto and she seems quite uncomfortable with it. Oh that’s a good question, they’re all quite the same in terms of vocal ability but I like Let It Be quite a lot vocally. I added it to the analysis, sorry I had forgotten about it!

I’m a YG stan, LOL. I admit that YG only has no “real” strong vocalist. I think only Daesung, Lee Hi and Seungyoon. What actually YG develops, based on my observation, is stage presence. Think of Taylor Swift. (I’m a fan of her, by the way) Technically, she’s a bad vocalist – no developed registers, strained high notes (she’s actually shouting, not singing, particularly in “All Too Well” and “Style”), inconsistent breathing support, etc. – but what makes her fans love her is her stage performance. Try watching her concerts (particularly, the Speak Now era), most of those are fantastic. X)
Anyway, I think, most YG fans think SM only focuses on “looks” since most of the time they, the talents, lip-sync. I admit that I’m not used to that kind of performance. LOL.

even though yg has bad vocalist and sm has good id rather listen to something that makes more sense and is more meaningful than “cola cola so elastic fantastic”, “sexy free and singel im ready to bingo”, “because i naughty naughty hey im mr simple”, “ring ding ding ding dong”, “im gonna eat you like a piece of cheese”, “just close your lips shut your tongue”, “loverholic lovertronic”….etc. i actually hated kpop for a while just because of these stupid lines that doesnt even make sense. this is honestly why i prefer yg’s music even though i dont stan any group because of the agency .i dont understand why people get so caught up with agencies until they think the artist/idol only got talent just because of their agency. these type os songs is the reason why i think sm idols talents has gone to waste. i cant take sm idols seriously just because of that. they deserve much more than to sing these types of songs and when the song actually make sense it usually sounds like a badly written fanfic or something. at least they have become better and there is some songs i really enjoy and other songs i hate. im not really into vocalist that are known to have good vocal techniques that much. id rather listen to an artist with good meanignful songs than an artist that only sings a buch of F5’s or something. i personally perfer voice more than vocal techniques. if youre born with a unique voice youre born with talent but if you have good vocal techniques you worked hard for your talent. some singers have both of it.

1. raina of after school should be above average, but she has good low and high notes… but onew is almost the same but he is below, why?
2. the supported range of d.o is competent but he is above average, since the suportted range of hi lee is above average and she’s above him, why? both are weak with the high notes (head/falsetto), right?
sorry for so many questions x.X I want to understand how you do to classifies them =))

Lack of consistency with resonance for Onew, sometimes he gets nasal and shows tension, even his low notes can be good, he has some really nice B2’s, but he’s not that consistent with airiness and support in his lower range either. He has it, but it’s not 100% consistent. Supported range isn’t everything, because you have to take into consideration consistency and tone production. SoYou’s supported range is G3 ~ B4/C5 but she has shallow tone production and a lot of nasality in her voice. D.O. isn’t 100% consistent on A4’s at all, or even within his supported range, from what I’ve been told. Also don’t forget that Lee Hi is a mezzo soprano, not a soprano. Yes both Lee Hi and Kyungsoo have weak falsettos, which also adds to the overall rating.
LikeLike
then onew had normal low and high notes he would be average to above average vocalist? now I understand better, thank youuu!
“Competent
Range wise, supported range without head voice for mezzo-sopranos falls somewhere within F#3 and C5/C#5
Range wise, supported range without head voice for tenors falls somewhere within C3/C#3 and G#4/A4”
kyungsoo isnt very consistent with A4, but with G#4 he is good. leehi doesnt support C5 – representing G#4 of tenor, only Bb4 – representing F#4 of tenor
now I was confused, sorry
LikeLike
Again supported range isn’t the most important part and it’s just a general idea, it’s not always the biggest part of the rating at all. No, Lee Hi supports B4. You’re relying too heavily on the higher side of the supported range, what about Lee Hi’s lower range? Compared to the inconsistent lower range that Kyungsoo has, actually I’m sorry I didn’t write Kyungsoo’s analysis but I’m going to correct his lower range one more time. I wouldn’t give him C#3, at least not from what I’ve heard of him. D3 is more accurate, underdeveloped falsetto, okay lower range, quite nice mixed range up until G#4, agility. The other reason is Kyungsoo’s inconsistency in pitch and stability, he often doesn’t have his breathing down and hence causes him to become pitchy. Lee Hi has basically no pitch issues apart from some of her vocal runs, that is another reason. She is a mezzo and she can hit full E3’s, so her lower range is quite nice AND she has very nice musicianship + agility. Actually the biggest boost for Lee Hi is her musicianship, which Kyungsoo lacks. All he really has is his mixed range resonance and agility, he doesn’t have the lower range or musicianship she has. Does that make it clearer?

Ah thank you. She is too stylistic. Her voice lacks technique, she’s not nasal. Her runs aren’t bad, but they’re not good. Her high notes aren’t good, she is very soul-jazzy in her style, it’s all style. Technically her G#3 was nice! Her Eb5 was not, her G#4’s were opened and nice. Her voice isn’t as low as Lee Hi’s though, she’s a Soprano from what I can tell and her singing isn’t bad, she has some nice moments and even maybe resonance, the resemblance comes mostly from the similarity in their styles, except she has a more nasty/dirty kind of style and Lee Hi is a little more edgy/soulful. She has potential, but she needs the right vocal instruction if not she could develop some bad vocal habits. She is pretty cool though, hopefully she doesn’t end up with YG …or JYP…

no chance of that, YG’s already set his eyes on her from the early on. Probably wanna build a group with lee hi or something. Second big mama? I think JYP is not as eager for her (surprisingly) as for the other contestants.
She studies in Berklee so I would’ve thought she’d be more solid in terms of vocal technique. She looks relaxed while doing the highs.
Do you think Amy Winehouse is too stylistic as well?
LikeLike
Well Park Bom went to Berklee as well and that didn’t save her. I am not familiar enough with Amy Winehouse, this girl isn’t bad but she does a lot of things for sake of style so I can’t account for her technique as a whole since I haven’t heard her do things due to style out of free will, in other words, I haven’t heard sing clean before she dirties it up.
LikeLike
Oh Thank you! So she’s not as fantastic as they made her up to be. interesting.
LikeLike
I think the term ‘fantastic’ can still be applied depending to individual definitions. They weren’t actually saying she’s the best vocalist ever, but they applaud her for her whole performance. Sure she may not be vocally perfect (and Lee Hi’s not perfect either), but she also has very good musicality. The original song was way different and she changed all of that.
If the parameter for fantastic only allows for vocals then yes perhaps she wouldn’t be fantastic.
The other contestant who’s obviously much more resonant, though, Esther Kim, doesn’t appeal to me because of the style in which she sings, not because she’s technically incapable. I won’t replay any of her songs.
Similar thing happened with Lee Hi vs Ji Min. Ji Min’s the more fluent vocally but Lee Hi has that x factor for me.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I do like all of Katie’s performances. To me, a kpop artist doesn’t have to be ‘fantastic’ vocally to deserve praise & recognition, other factors are important too and Katie certainly has those.
It’s just that they seem to over-praise contestants in Kpop Star (like Yoonha! I don’t get the hype about her. Her cover with Seunghwan was great but that’s all?? )
I know nothing about music but Katie sounded great to me and the judges kept praising her so I wasn’t expecting this analysis I guess. I was laughing at myself as much as I was laughing at them lol
Oh, Esther is quite decent along with Grace but I don’t reply any of their songs. They sound… ‘bland’ ?
I prefer Lily actually. She’s not the best singer but her performances are entertaining & always make me smile. The Korean public seems to like her too lol

I take that back about Esther. I think her range is wide and she’s very resonant but often off key, like in the recent Lay Me Down https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JNOZqqDuQ4. (feel free to disagree Ahmin)
I don’t even listen to Grace :D, I think people like Lee hi and Esther has that added advantage being husky, as when they play ‘soul’ they sound natural, but people with clean voices sounds fake when they do it.
I agree with Lily. She has her own unique-ness.

Another great analysis here Ahmin ! It seems to be a trend with YG vocalists to have a more developed low register and a very undeveloped falsetto… their vocal coaches seem to be quite disappointing and they waste their idols potentials. BTW, what do you think of CLC and Mamamoo? I know they’re still rookies though haha

aaah yes, Mamamoo shows lots of promise and they don’t seem to follow the Kpop traditions. I think CLC has promise, apart from Yujin she seems on a Dara level haha. That’s what I meant, YG doesn’t teacher his artists very well… there’s lots of wasted potential there.

^ The sad thing about YG is it produces entertainers, not vocalists. I’m actually wasted right now since Park Bom used to have a better breathing support than her current style. Meanwhile, I have watched a performance of Daesung and Seungri back in 2010. Both of them have good voice and have potential to be a vocalist, especially DS who slayed a D6 falsetto. SR, on the other hand, can actually produce a resonant mixed belt. If only YG trained them, I’m sure both of them would be at least as the same level of Taemin and Lee Hi now. >_<

Actually yes, after my current drafts, I’ll do Changmin of 2AM, Solji of EXID, U.Ji of Bestie, Soyeon of T-Ara, Minah of Girls’ Day, Gayoon of 4Minute and G.O. of MBLAQ.

I know you said Jiyoon is really bad but how is Gayoon?

I’m not sure yet but I believe she’s not far from Jiyoon. She’s average at best.

Thanks for the analysis! Good to now that she isn’t a sad case like others in YG. I hope she improves more, but I doubt that this will happen in YG lol
Also, could you answer something? How was that note (and I think she did a run at the end) at 2:52? Is better than her old lives?
LikeLike
It wasn’t too bad, it did have some tension in it from what I can hear. It was a C5.

Hi, Ahmin. Can i asking my voice in here? i always tried to post in the voice but maybe error.
How about my voice now?
i tried too Lee Hi song ‘rose’ they said i’m mezzo soprano but i still can’t sing Lee Hi high note part seriously.
LikeLike
Well if you read the analysis, you’d see that Lee Hi is a pretty well developed Mezzo in terms of range and she sings quite bright in range, with a high tessitura. So for someone completely untrained, it’d still be challenging to sing in her range. Your timing sounds kinda better than usual actually! There’s still no real support, the breathing needs work, the placement needs also work, you’re very much in your nose, you need to open up the back of your throat (yawn a little) and to really open your mouth properly. I wouldn’t recommending singing in a language you can’t phonate nor pronounce properly. You also still rely heavily in your throat and your voice can come out pretty pitchy.
LikeLike
Thank you, lol i really tried to sing without used nose. I think my voice is under mezzo soprano? my voice is so low and i can’t with highest note. How about Toni Braxton type voice anyway? I can sing her low part in unbreak my heart lol.
LikeLike
I’m pretty sure you’re not a Contralto. Unbreak My Heart isn’t that low, Hyorin, U.Ji, Lena Park and many other Sopranos could sing that.

lol thank you again i’m happy you said i’m not in contralto type voice anyway maybe i should lesson about vocal. i can’t imagine if i sopranos type voice its so HARD to believe lol. if i lesson about vocal maybe i can sing with real support range like what you say before. haha i know my pronounce its so bad in korean and english song. thank you thank you.

They’re all part of the future projects and will be analyzed as soon as there’s enough material and they’ve been around long enough ^ ^ As well as having had enough time to improve as well.

Lee Hi is a better vocalist, Katie Kim is too stylistic. She has a closed throat throughout most of her singing. Even when Lee Hi is out of her supported range she still sounds bright, Katie sounds scratchy and small in general, her singing is all creaky. Lee Hi’s placement is better, support is better and her runs are more accurate. 2:08 was whiny on her part but 1:54 was just yelled on Katie’s part. I mean yes they do have similar styles, but Lee Hi has superior technique. 2:35 that run was much more simple than Lee Hi’s next run, but because Lee Hi’s was more complicated, it was slightly less controlled too in terms of pitch. Also Lee Hi is a mezzo, Katie Kim may sound like one but I think she’s a Soprano.

Also, can you say how she did here? 3:29~3:40?

She is not worse at all! It was fine, she did well. Except for the C5 “다 너때문이지이이이이” But she often goes for C5’s with an EE vowel sound so it becomes tight.

She should leave YG. They’ve proven themselves incompetent in terms of handling vocal talents several times over. Daesung and Bom have both either regressed or barely improved since debut. Do you also believe she’s screwed (lol) by being on YG? I fear for the safety of her blessed vocal chords

I think she’s okay, so far she hasn’t regressed and Minzy has made progress vocally so it’s not all lost.

Awww, Lee hi got a really high score. I checked the score for Yoseob, IU and others and they were getting average. Lee Hi sounds like most American singers i listen too. Too many good singers are in America locally. She is so young, I wonder if she will improve to Christina Aguilera’s level in the future.
LikeLike
Yoseob is in the same ranking as Lee Hi if you recheck , and Christina Aguilera is sadly not too far, like almost the same ranking or even less
LikeLike
Funny you’d say that because not only Yoseob and Lee Hi are on the same ranking, Christina Aguilera would get a lower “score” than them if she were to be analyzed. So Lee Hi doesn’t need to get on her level, Christina needs to get on Lee Hi’s level.

lol, i was thought that lee hi is far better than christina. i think christina just better than average singer. i think she just a avg to above avg vocalist. i think…

I think A to AA is still too high for Christina Aguilera. I’m sure she’s only an average singer. Her C5s are screamed, actually. I don’t know why were they saying she’s a good vocalist when her technic is shit. >_>
I think Lee Hi should aim at the level of Beyonce since she is capable of being a coloratura mezzo. 😀

She’s still under YG. It’s just her next comeback will be under Tablo’s agency. At least that’s what YG said.

yg ent has a bad vocal trainers and not so good vocalists overall 😦 esp now that wheesung, gummy, and big mama aren’t there anymore… lee hi can grow by working with various musicians, but apparently yg didn’t let her do that. she’ll probably be sticking with epik high who imo can’t use her vocal in full potential (“it’s cold” is not for her! it’s for vocalists like younha or taeyeon). sigh.

how we count octaves ?
LikeLike
That’s perfectly fine that you have a question haha so basically C D E F G A B C is one octave right? So every new C marks a new octave. So for Lee Hi, D3 goes up to D4, making one octave, then D4 to D5 is one more octave and then D5 to F5 is Eb5, E5 and F5, 3 semitones or one note and one semitone.

i can play 17 keys on piano ! so how many octaves is my voice ??

Ah that’s what you meant. A2 ~ C5 is 2 octaves, 1 note and 1 semitone. Up to C6 makes it 3 octaves, 1 note and 1 semitone.

So her lower range, agility, and musicianship the only thing that make her AA to COM? Because according to the analysis she doesn’t have a head voice, her mixed register isn’t very good and she’s not consistently resonant…her ability seems to be the same of someone in the A to AA category.
Compared to other girls in the same rating like Raina or Yerin…I’m confused lol.
LikeLike
Actually her resonance is more or less consistent. Again you’re forgetting she’s a mezzo so things work slightly differently for her compared to Sopranos. Her lower range is really nice. She is very much a more AA vocalist if anything, her lower range is what gives her the upper hand.
LikeLike
Oh it said she was resonant from time to time so that sounded like it was only sometimes not most of the time. I meant like its not very high either, her supported range, Like Raina can go to C5 while she tops out at B4. So it’s because she’s a mezzo that she’s not expected to be able to go as high, so it’s impressive for a mezzo…this sounds all wrong I can’t properly vocalize what I’m thinking for some reason lol.
Okay so if she were a soprano then she’d be a lot lower basically?
LikeLike
Well I mean it would be unfair to judge her harshly on her B4 if Raina is only a semitone higher. Her lower range is also considerably better. B4 for a mezzo it’s not all that impressive regardless but E3 is impressive regardless. Not a lot lower, she could potentially still be AA as a Soprano with the same exact supported range.
LikeLike
God it totally is lol, why didn’t I know that? I just assumed it was like a world away from B4. Ok thanks, I’m not confused anymore lol.

Hi! I recently saw some videos of her and found 2 songs (she’s not the original singer in them) that not many know about and I was wondering what do you think of her performances ^^
LikeLike
These are nice, in the Epik High song where she’s filling in for Lee Sora, she’s doing well with transitions but her falsetto is quite airy and her tone comes out pretty throaty in the falsetto because of the air but the overall pitch is pretty good. In the other video, besides the Eb3 in the beginning and some Aye vowel Bb4’s, she did well. She has issues with the aye vowel for sure. The Oh vowel can be an issue.

She actually sounds lower overall in “Hold Your Hand”, it’s interesting. The “hold your HAND”, Bb4’s, they’re closed due to the vowel but the come back or come on, whichever it was she was singing, those were much better. 3:05 she hit F5 in falsetto. Love this song, let me listen to the other one.
0:29 she hit D3 very airy, but the G3’s were really nice in the verse. 1:15 Eb3 again airy. Maybe the other one was Eb3 as well..1:28 C5’s, a bit tight on the approach but her mix is much lighter and brighter in this area of her voice. It’s funny, her voice is maturing in differing ways throughout her range and due to her musical approach. It’s not a bad approach, it’s slightly too airy sometimes and it lacks support but it’s not really pushed so it’s not that bad of a direction. I hear some differences in her overall vocal approach but nothing I’d call drastic improvement just yet, since her mix has always been brighter than the rest of her range, it’s just kind of more relaxed now which is a good sign. ^ ^ I’m relieved for her.

Considering the vocal training (or lack of) in her company, slight improvement is or even not regressing is a good sign. 🙂
Looking forward to live performances.

Is it possible for the upcoming live versions to have better technique than the studio?
LikeLike
Not that likely but the reason it’s best to wait for the live performances is cause doing well in studio means nothing if you can’t replicate it live.. Also because you can alter vocals in studio but live your consistency is exposed.

Hold My Hand 0:02 0:54 2:04 2:40 3:14 the Bb4’s are closed, but the Bb4’s on “comeback” are much more opened and the approach is much better. The support is there for both, it’s just the vowel for “hand” is a really tight aye and she’s just not opening up the vowel well enough. 2:28 oh that run was sloppy, that could’ve been better, it was better in studio. 2:34 that run was much nicer, the rhythmic bounce on it was really nice. 3:08 could’ve been better, she really needs to work on her vowels.
0:18 0:33 0:37 nice G3’s throughout Breathe. 1:09 Eb3 airy, same as the studio version. 1:22 too airy on the lightly mixed C5’s, the support is shallow and she’s overcompensating supporting by having a slightly high larynx and too much air coming through her vocal cords. It’s a healthier approach than her closed throat mixed notes in the fifth octave when singing softly, but it’s still incorrect. Verse and chorus were the same again, she’s slightly louder on the second chorus but the same problem is more or less happening throughout with the C5’s. 3:19 Eb5 high larynx, too light…yeah there’s nothing truly new, no big change or improvement in her technique.
