Vocal Range
C#3 ~ D6 (3 Octaves and 1 Semitone)
Supported Range
G3 ~ D5/Eb5
G3 ~ Bb5 (with head voice)
Voice Type
Soprano
Strengths/Achievements
- Strongest vocalist in f(x)
- One of the most developed head voices amongst female K-pop vocalists
- Achieved resonance a number of times from G4 ~ E5 range
- Able to mix up to A5
- Able to keep a stable larynx even in her lowest notes
- Able to project forward her lower register range between B3 ~ G3, occasionally F#3’s and F3’s
- Consistent with resonance and placement, very good placement on belts
- Very relaxed and healthy vibrato
- Head placed studio A5 in mixed voice
- Big improvement since debut
Points for Improvement
- Loses consistency on E5’s, and strains anywhere from F5 or above
- At times tends to get nasal mid-phrases but not in belts
- Tongue tension and pulling sound back in placement may happen at times
- Notes below G#3/G3 tend to be very quiet and a bit too airy
- May present vocal fatigue during a song that requires a lot of belting throughout the whole song
- Head voice may be resonant but isn’t as often showcased as she could
- Runs at times may be sloppy and slow
- Pitch and Intonation are not completely consistently on point
- Nasality may be present in her head voice
- Transitions between mix and head show a lack of control in head voice pitch wise
Registers
- Lower register: at times able to produce well and full notes down to F3 and F#3 but may lose consistency in keeping cord connection down there. Consistently able to produce supported notes from G3 and above, whereas notes below F3 generally become very quiet and breathy.
- Mixed register: Very well balanced mix, not too much chest and generally bright and yet resonant. Placement is often kept well and opened during belted notes up until D5 and at times Eb5 live, and consistently up until Eb5 in studio. Live and in studio she’s been able to produce resonant E5s but not consistently and anything above E5 has a tense high larynx. Nasality may be present in this register.
- Upper register: Notes in her head voice are mostly very pure and bright, very well produced without breathiness. She has projection, cord connection and is able to articulate well in this register, but may often confuse mask placement with nasal placement in her head voice. Able to produce resonant and relaxed notes up until Bb5.
Agility
Luna’s voice is a very light soprano voice with a brightness to it. One of her biggest weakness is her lack of vocal agility. Her runs are often slow and sloppy, lacking note precision. She doesn’t often sing R&B nor does runs, but when she tries to add them to a melody they sound slightly off and flat, without fully having a thought-process before hand to plan them out and practice them fully so that they hit every single note precisely. She does not usually show an ability to do runs that are faster than a slow-tempo one, but occasionally is able to precisely separate each single note in her vocal runs, specially in her head voice, such as in “해뜬날“.
Overall analysis
One of the most capable vocalists amongst SM vocalists and in general, the newer generation of female idol groups, Luna is a one of a kind vocalist. Some may argue and put Luna down by saying does not have the prettiest natural tone, but starting off as a dancer turned main vocalist, she’s been able to show great improvement from her debut days till present as a vocalist, which should give her more than enough credit as a professional vocalist. Luna possesses a light bright soprano voice, with a very youthful feminine color to it. It retains a clean sound throughout her range and presenting technical control superior to most other main vocalists.
Luna’s lower range is one that shows an impressive amount of development in comparison to the average female pop vocalist. Most of the time she’s able to keep a stable larynx in her lower range and although breathiness may be present, she’s been able to show more than occasionally that she’s able to keep tone production forward and fullness in tone all the way down to G3 and at times also F#3 and F3 where breathiness may be present but tone isn’t completely lost. Notes below F3 however show a lack of ability to keep the sound full and eventually turn into a very breathy sound. In songs like “아프고 아픈 이름” she shows nicely connected F3’s, but in “천일동안” her F#3’s are quiet and breathy, showing a lack of consistency in that range.
Her mixed register is a very healthy register where she’s able to keep a nicely supported sound throughout without losing the tone and keeping a fulness without the breathiness present. From the time when she debuted until now this register has shown very good improvement, from having been often tense and letting the sound go back into her throat, she’s learned to keep an open full throat, a relaxed tongue and let the sound be placed in her mask and projecting very well with good resonance. She is consistently able to belt and keep resonance up until D5 live, with many good Eb5’s and consistently up until Eb5 in studio. Occasionally she’s able to produce supported and even resonant E5’s live and in studio, but generally loses the stability in her larynx above that, straining anything above E5. However so she’s been able to show a head placed A5 in studio, even if not live. Although she is able to be resonant on her E5’s in “Pinocchio”, in their most recent comeback her “Red Light” E5’s are often tense with a high larynx. The tension in her upper register seems to exist more commonly when the vowel “Aye (애/에)” is included, closing her throat more often than when she has to sing other vowels.
One of the most developed head voices amongst female K-pop vocalists, Luna shows an understanding of placement and cord connection beyond her years when she uses this register. Her head voice is generally very bright and healthy, never really being throaty or constricted. The only fact is that, the only time she’s sung above Bb5 in studio (a C#6 in “종이 심장 Paper Heart”), her throat seems to do the same she does when she gets to E5’s or F5’s in studio, and somewhat become constricted and pushed. Nasality in this register is also a common flaw, where she will switch but let the sound come into her nose too often and not fully resonate with an open throat sound. In the same performance of “해뜰 날” where Luna showcases her resonant Bb5, she also shows occasional nasality when switching into her head voice from her mix. Although more recently, Luna has shown the ability to sing above Bb5 live, the truth still stands that when she does, such as in her C#6 from “편지할게요“, her larynx raises slightly and tension is present in her head voice. On a more recent episode of “Masked Singer”, on Luna’s performance of “슬픈인연” Luna, again, displays her developed head voice by hitting not only Bb5 and F#5, but also C6 and D6 in a section of the song, still showcasing resonance and support in her head voice only as high as Bb5, but an extension up to D6, where her voice thins out and becomes less resonant and supported.
Amongst her weaknesses, Luna’s inability to control her nasality mid-phrase is another one. She often has a lifted soft palate in belted notes, but mid-phrases she often lets the sound go into her nose and become blocked. This was often the case during her earlier years, but more recently has been greatly reduced although it still happens, which hinders the effectiveness of her projection and overall sound. Another one of Luna’s problems is that oftentimes she is relaxed during belted notes, but when she tries to add a little bit of attitude and energy into her singing, her sound becomes slightly tense and muffled because she pushes the sound by tensing up her tongue with a half growl-like sound, instead of simply adding more chest voice and/or volume. That generally happens in her lower mixed range and more commonly in the fourth octave up to C5.
Another flaw is her lack of ability to control her transitions into head voice. Although she’s able to fully connect her registers, at times she might not control her breath well enough and will let the pitch go sharp when she transitions into head voice. However so, her breath support is still very consistent throughout her performances and she possesses a very natural and healthy vibrato. She at times may show vocal fatigue within sections of songs when she is forced to stay in her upper register showing that it still lacks in terms of consistency and strength, although that seems to also be improving over time. Her intonation however only occasionally has flatness, where she is mostly very precise and in tune when singing melodies, showing good control of her breath and vocal cord coordination.
Luna shows an understanding of musicality, which she shows only when she is able to perform slow ballads and pop oriented songs, able to dynamically change songs and interpret them with good technique within her supported range. She has yet to really broaden her horizon in more genres of music, but she’s also been part-taking in musicals which help her grow vocally in the musicality aspect of her singing. Although at times she might make technical mistakes, she’s able to show a control of her voice that adds to the dynamics of her singing very well. She’s shown such improvement in her singing, that’s possibly just a matter of time until she fixes her other minor flaws in consistency and tone production. She is a vocalist with a growing passion for singing and draws inspiration from many divas, who influenced her improvement and musical interest.
Musicianship
Along with vocal agility, musicianship is another area where that part of her technique overlaps and shows weaknesses. Although at times she shows her own color and interpretation of songs without trying to add any specific genre of music into it, meaning no specific rock effects, R&B vocal runs or blues notes, she does have her normal simple pop/ballad alterations in which some notes and rhythms are occasionally changed. However so, she does try at times to add vocal runs which come off sloppy and take away from moments where she could’ve shown more vocal control. Those are occasional nonetheless, making it an area to be worked on but not really a big issue in her normal vocal delivery.

I’m going to copy-paste. “There’s nothing really new to analyze about this performance. Good resonance, good dynamics, good harmonies, good transitions into her head voice. Just the good level of vocal performance usually shown by Luna. 2:40 ~ 2:45 the Eb5’s there were really nicely placed and the approach was nice, the F5’s weren’t bad there either. Nice performance.”

Would you consider doing a vocal range video for Luna’s mini album when its released?

Maybe. If it’s just 6 songs, it shouldn’t take me too long so I could do it. I’d just need motivation from her part so I hope she shows me some fun stuff to make a video for haha

This may have been lip synched as you can see her putting the mic very far away from her mouth around 3:51 and absolutely no change is heard in the volume of her voice. Vocally though, she sounds nice in here. She had a few nice runs in the beginning, peaked at an F#5 in her head voice. Again as always, a very nice and clean supported head voice. She had a belted C#5 and that sounded nice and opened, overall nice. 4:05 that C#5 was nice up until the vibrato kicked in, the vibrato kind of messed her up. 4:23 F#5, very tight, whiny and strained but again nothing new there.

Thank you! I also noticed she probably lip synced, at least some part of it, but still was curious:)

What are some specific things she does better in comparison to Taeyeon? (like you’ve stated that Luna has more developed head voice but is there any other direct contrast that could help me understand?) thanks 🙂
LikeLike
Her mixed voice is a lot more balanced, so she is able to sing above her supported range with a brighter and better approach. She is more consistent with resonance around D5 and Eb5, her lower range is chestier and better projected. Her pitch is somewhat better.
LikeLike
As previously stated, Luna has a better head voice because she supports higher and the overall connection and tone production is better, she also has a better lower register because she has more connection and tone down there. One could also say her mix is better because she has more supported notes and even resonant notes above D5 compared to TaeYeon.

Sunny can sing in a connected head voice but the support is questionable. She hasn’t been throughly analyzed so I can’t say much more, you’d have to wait.

Hi there! She sang two of her new songs on the radio the other day and I was wondering if you could analyze them? She sounds like she’s struggling and her voice sounds rough which I’m not really used to from her. What do you think? Thank you!
LikeLike
0:42 slightly flat on Free Somebody. 0:47 rushed runs. 1:01 1:17 2:16 2:23 2:31 2:48 strained E5’s. 1:17 she made a face afterwards like it hurt, maybe she’s a bit sick or just tired? Luna doesn’t usually sing songs that have her belting E5’s constantly, so it’s understandable she’d struggle through that range, she can’t support up there. Aside from the flat note, runs and strained E5’s, she sounded just fine everywhere else. A couple of whispered G3’s in My Medicine, but nothing alarming. 2:22 oh no no for that run. She sounds fine, it’s just challenging for her.
LikeLike
That run in My Medicine at 2:22 was it nasal and lightly mixed/more heady?

It was a bright and heady, but not too much. It was only nasal for like a split of a second, not throughout.

How did she do in this performance of Free Somebody at Sketchbook? It was recorded last June 1 but only aired yesterday. The first E5 at 0:49 didn’t sound as strained to me but I can’t hear it too well because of the backing track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MutNRfB2zOw
She sang another song at Sketchbook but it wasn’t that challenging for her (it was a zion.t and crush song haha) I’ll leave it here anywa but you don’t really need to give an opinion on it. 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03T8pATnvPo

Good for Luna, appearing on Sketchbook by herself. ^ ^ Let me see..well I hear tension throughout with all those E5’s, but I mean belting E5’s constantly is hard work.

Thank you for the response lol I thought the first E5 was a bit less strained than the others but I guess it just wasn’t obvious enough to me. It is haha it worries me a bit especially when I remember Taeyeon’s F#5s lol but she says she’s been taking care of her health so she can belt all those notes and she’s been avoiding singing higher than E5 live from what I’ve noticed. (She recently sang It Was Love live with Block B’s Taeil which had a G5 but Taeil sang that part of the song)
Anyway thank you for responding as always!

I feel like she sounds a lot more resonant throughout her range in the stages she has performed so far in her solo and in the album. Is that just me or is that true and it’s just a result of finally singing music that properly shows it? I know she’s still not resonant/open on her E5s yet, so that’s not what I mean, but I just want to know if I’m hearing right. Thank you!
LikeLike
Well it’s hard to say considering she’s not having much of a chance to show resonance, since she’s singing a lot of Es. I am not sure she’s more resonant because Luna has always had nice resonance anyway.

This might be a weird question, but would luna (at her debut rank) have been able to sing the music on the mini album she just released? Like I know she wouldn’t have sounded as good but are there any specific things she wouldn’t have been able to sing at all? You don’t have to answer, but I’d appreciate any interpretation of that question you can offer!!
LikeLike
I don’t think she’d project her E5s or place them that well. Mostly placement and tongue tension would be the difference.
LikeLike
Thank you! I have another question which might also be weird, but i’ve always felt like the way she sings is very effortful. Sort of like it’s taking her a lot of concentration and control to sing the way she does rather than it seeming effortless like I feel it seems for other singers at her rank or above. Even some below her. Is that something I’m imagining, or is it true and it’s something in her delivery style? I don’t know if I explained it well enough.

I don’t know if I’ve ever noticed that from her really so I can’t say I agree nor disagree.

You don’t have to analyze the whole video (though you could if it provides new info on Taeil) because Luna doesn’t sing the high note but I’m curious about how she sings in the lowered key. Some of her low notes are whispered/don’t come out(?) but I’m wondering if her lower octave has seen any improvement/development. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OXjJqMk-DA Thanks so much for answering all my questions!

That song is called Don’t Cry For Me in English? That’s odd, the Korean title is very different lol she sounds great, nice head voice transitions. Strained throaty E5 at 2:51, some really nice D5’s. There was no run at 2:24 but her runs were fine throughout, fairly simple. The Aye vowel needs to open up on those C#5’s though. So nothing new.

Her rating has always been competent to good on this blog. Do you mean when in her career? I am sorry, I didn’t really keep a tab on her rating throughout the years. Her agility is not the main thing at all, it would be her consistency in her mix, if she could maintain more consistency around D5/Eb5 with resonance and openness and produce consistent resonance up to E5, she’d be a good vocalist.

She just had a lot freer and better placed E5’s during that era, perhaps due to her overall vowel shape and placement. The other E5’s from Red Light are on a more closed vowel and the others I’m not sure.

I’m a music theater major and I’m so glad a site like this exists! There are so many idols I love but so many of them are weak singers and people just get all sensitive and upset when seeing them faced with criticism. As singers, it is their job to improve and be the best that they can be. (Ie: I love Sehun, but the boy can’t sing and has a lot to work on.) I have to admit I was a little surprised by this rating but your thorough research made sense, Luna has one of my favorite voices in K-pop.

Hi Ahmin! This isn’t related to Luna specifically but it’s a vocal technique question. When vocalists work on improving their technique do they set certain goals for themselves? Like do you think Luna works with her vocal coach on making her E5s consistently supported and resonant and to reduce her tongue tension? Or are improvement goals more general? I know Luna has recently described her high notes as “thin” so she’s obviously aware of where she needs to improve, but I’m just curious how vocalists guide their improvement.

I can’t answer this because I don’t know Luna personally nor her coach. Everyone works differently, so I don’t know how their process is.

A little bit of nasality throughout the verse, but mostly pretty clean support. She sounds very comfortable. 1:14 nice head voice up to Eb5. 1:53 their harmonies were nice but they shouldn’t harmonize a run if they’re not going to be very clean with it. 2:17 not too bad with those runs, nice placement for sure. 2:35 she phrases C5’s so easily, she is so opened. It’s nice to hear it. 2:45 The Eb5’s have a bit of tension on them. The F5 as well, a bit tight but well placed. 3:17 tense E5. 3:24 B4 to C#5, nice. 4:03 good transition into head voice. She did well, there was nothing I wouldn’t expect from Luna. Her partner isn’t bad either, their harmonies were nice.

Yes I do think she did well as well, as usual. You sound very young, you have a very nice voice. This key seems a bit low for you in the beginning, your tone is a bit too airy. Your tone isn’t too shallow, it has some sense of flow, legato and support. There’s far too much airiness and you seem to favor “pretty” singing, as in singing softly, airily, without using a full connection of your vocal cords. You need to use more connection of your vocal cords and rely less on air, also use a better development of your chest voice. Subjectively speaking, I think you sound pretty but you lack power and volume. I think it sounds fine, it’s just a bit strong for you and you’re not giving the song the power it needs.

Whoever is singing with you sounds like a tenor and I suppose it would be a safe guess to call you a baritone, yes. There’s a lack of support throughout your singing so to me you need to start from the basics, breathing, relaxing, eliminating tension. Belting high songs should not be your priority. It’s a challenging song.

It’s been asked about before actually. It’s a pretty simple performance, not too challenging for Luna. She sounds fine, supported, relaxed. A bit tired around 3:16, but 3:22 she sounds full, strong, opened and completely resonant. Some nice head voice moments. Amber still sounds fairly airy, unsupported. She has decent pitch but the support is not quite there. 3:28 nice head voice as well. 3:32 very throaty for Amber, but it’s understandable since Amber can barely support her voice at all. 3:43 That E5 was tense but well placed for Luna. It’s a nice performance as a duo, harmonies as well. Individually of course they have different issues.

Would you be able to tell me what notes she’s hitting between 3:35 and 3:50ish? I think it’s an E5 at the very end, but my ear for notes isn’t excellent. If it is an E5, how is it? I think it’s still not as good as her Pinocchio ones, but it sounds better than her Red Light/Free Somebody E5s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwbUEKeP9aY
Also, she recently sang a song on a show called Pan Stealer in a style I’m not used to from her. Most of it sounds like it’s in her supported range but she sounds to me like she’s pushing a lot. That E5 at 3:45 was really throaty and kind of flat too. I’ve heard way better from her, maybe not from Red Light but from Free Somebody? Yeah they were better. She hit a couple of E5’s. She might just be tired because this much throatiness isn’t characteristic of her. At around 2:40 she started opening up really nicely in her mix, a little bit of pushing but the approach was better than the style she was going for throughout the song. This isn’t exactly what I’d call her comfort zone stylistically, but that part made me feel relieved for her. 3:30 really throaty up to F5 down to E5 and then D5. She sounds somewhat tired as well, which would explain the quality of her singing here.

She had also just performed more of her musical In the Heights, so I think the suggestion that she’s tired makes a lot of sense. Hopefully she gets a chance to rest properly before she does more singing stuff and thanks for your quick reply!

Who has a stronger mix voice? Taeyeon or Luna. I am aware that Luna can carry support up to Eb5 while Taeyeon’s up to D5.
In Luna’s Analysis, it was stated that Luna Achieve resonance a number of times in G4- E5 range.
In Taeyeon’s Analysis, it was stated that she has consistent resonance from A4-C#5 range.
I’m bit confuse. Thank you. 🙂

I don’t understand what there is to be confused. Like what part of your comment doesn’t answer your own question? I’m asking genuinely. You’ve answered your own question.

Is her current voice thinner than before ? I think her old voice in Pinochio must be stronger than right now …
By the way, i have another question ?
Could you analize this performance ?
2:36 what note did she hit ? Is it good ??
LikeLike
I think she used to be better during Pinocchio too but I think it has to do with her being more overworked now. 0:21 E3 the lowest note in the song, 0:29 G3’s, supported, 0:33 lowered larynx E3’s. So this follows what it’s already known of Luna. Support down to G3, below that she pushes her larynx down. She sounds fine throughout the rest of the verse and first chorus, she is light, relaxed. Well supported, full. 1:10 a bit nasal in her head voice, again nothing new. Her head voice is a bit airy but not to an extent of lack of support. 1:46 that run wasn’t bad, it was fairly well done, but could’ve been cleaner. 1:54 I hear some tongue tension due to her diction, but otherwise she sounds well placed and supported. 2:03 her head voice is a lot better here. 2:08 that D5 was really well placed and well supported. 2:22 could’ve been better, just because of the vowel. 2:30 the runs there were a bit sloppy. 2:36 was an F5, strained, throaty and pushed but the brightness helped her overall. So no, it isn’t good. 3:00 again another nice resonant D5, her phrasing within that range is really smooth. 3:14 her Oh vowel could be more opened for sure.

So, could we say that pinochio era is the best period of her career ?After this era, i could not hear her sings any good E5 like she has done 😦
Does she reach her limit ?
LikeLike
I don’t think it’s her limit at all but it seemed like the best era for her E5’s.

Out of curiosity, could her big weight loss have caused the difficulty she now has with her E5’s? I assume that to be able to really support a note that high you have to be fairly healthy and strong and none of the really good singers you’ve ever mentioned on this blog are super skinny, frail people, but I could be totally wrong about that.
LikeLike
You know I never thought about it and it’s not something I’ve ever researched deeply so I don’t really know for sure. I mean Sohyang is fairly skinny, so weight loss can probably affect you but being skinny in itself shouldn’t be a problem.

I’m afraid that her voice may have worsened because of the plastic surgery of her nose that she probably had 😦 Or bad coaching at SM…

I find it so weird that there can be (sometimes) such big gaps between main and lead vocalists in some groups, like in the case of Luna and Krystal. I understand that some members like rappers or dances may not get nearly as much vocal training, but when it comes to vocalists I’d sort of expect all of them to receive the same amount of work. Do you think this could be due to talent rather than skill…given that some people learn faster than others, or is it the corporation’s fault in not training all their vocalists the same way?
LikeLike
I think it’s due to the training and its inconsistencies. It works for some people who already have a foundation for singing naturally (aka talent) but not for others who have more issues and they aren’t addressed.

Hi! Can you make analysis for her? Just for this video. I don’t know if you know her but she made Luna cried in Star King when she was just young because Luna was flustered when this girl sang One Moment In Time
I want to know what note in All by Myself that David Foster is talking about.
Please thank you.

You haven’t commented on this blog much so I guess you don’t know. We don’t answer video questions that don’t relate to vocalists we would analyze. We only analyze K-Contemporary vocalists, Charice Pempegco is a Filipina vocalist. We are not going to ever analyze her so we don’t answer video questions related to her. Luna improved a lot since then. Charice has always been able to sing high, but she doesn’t have proper technique. She tends to use her throat, push her tongue back into her larynx and sing with pushed technique. She used to be better when she was younger but she can’t support in the fifth octave now. She is not anything higher than an above average vocalist. The note is F5.

My first thought is “This is lip synched.” Not that it bothers me too much, cause it’s a vocal song and it was live when they recorded it in studio. But since it’s not live, I will be brief because issues with pitch would have been fixed, or issues with harmonies and whatnot. 1:46 her runs lack flow and precision. 1:54 shouty B4 for him. This is not necessarily a challenging range for her at all, so there’s nothing different to talk about technically. 2:30 oh damn she almost fell. That was also the highest note she mixed, D5. She is perfectly within her supported range throughout.

Luna held a Christmas busking concert with Choi of Lu:kus and finally the video is up. I don’t know if you have any intention of ever analyzing him (or if you’ve heard of him), but I thought you could use the video for him and for anything new for her. I know you’re busy so for convenience they sing their OST duet “Healing Love” starting at 9:50 which has never been done live before. They also sing “Forget It” (the crush song) starting around 6:00, and I know it’s nothing new for Luna but Choi sings parts so you could use it for him. At 13:50 they sing “Isn’t she Lovely” and “have yourself a merry little christmas.” I’m not totally sure what song is at the beginning but it starts at 1:05. You don’t have to respond with anything unless anything jumps out as you as particularly good or bad, or if you have an opinion of Choi since I can’t quite tell if he’s technical or stylistic, so thank you!!

Honestly I have never heard of this group…But he introduced himself as L.A.U.’s Choi, so they changed their name, right? So again I don’t know them, I don’t hear anything particularly different for Luna. I had it playing in the background. What I could hear is some support from Choi, tightness and strain on G4’s, at times even F4’s seem tight. He has a decent mid-low range without so much tightness and he has good pitch also nice harmonies overall. Again I have really heard of him before but he seems to be a lead vocalist, although he did introduce himself as a main vocalist. 6:55 those F4’s were the ones that caught me off guard for being a bit too tight. He didn’t seem too airy or nasal throughout most of this, he didn’t seem to favor those styles so I think he just has underdeveloped technique in general.

Luna went on KBS singing battle (which is… kind of an annoying show because the contestants constantly try to out-belt each other to impress the audience but ehhhh) and she used her head voice a lot there at around 3:54-4:00 she does D5 then B5 then G5 and A5? Then at 4:36-4:50 some notes in head voice with D6 I think (and some disconnected hv notes too)? Was this around the same quality as it was in her performance of Sad Fate in Masked Singer. Thanks!

She is a bit nasal in the beginning, the guy singing is cute. She is being nasal here and there for style, it’s not cute. 4:08 he was like I CAN HEAD VOICE B5 TOO! Hers was tight but his was especially tight and screechy. 4:39 Luna is the only Soprano in K-pop who actually uses her head voice, but it’s pretty tight above Bb5. 4:50 oh my god his run was a mess, it’s really pitchy and he’s just trying to show off. Greg’s Korean is so cute. lol

LMAO right at 4:08 I laughed at that. the end made me cringe he kept trying to add more embellishments but I understand that it’s a survival show lol. Would you say she uses her hv more often than Ailee (or even Shannon) as of late?

Hi Ahmin! Luna sang on Immortal Song with her twin and they won! It sounds like Luna uses her head voice a lot and maybe belts an E5 or E5 flat? My ear for notes isn’t the best. Also, Luna has always said Jinyoung has better technique than her, but she’s also training to be an opera singer, so I’m not sure how that works out, but she does sound pretty good in this less classical style. Anyway, I know sometimes Luna’s higher notes are hidden in the melodies with Jinyoung (not as badly as in her duet with Greg) but I figured this could be more to listen to. Thanks!

You beat me to posting this lmao. Tbh, I’d argue it’s Jinyoung’s notes that are buried in the harmonies lmao I’m surprised they made Jinyoung take the lower harmony but I guess it makes sense considering her tone? I think she actually belted F5 then E5 (and an F#5 near the end)? I would’ve wanted to see Jinyoung mix higher or use her head voice more because this doesn’t really show off the extent of her technique (as much as it does for Luna imo). I’m glad Luna’s showing off her head voice a lot recently though and I hope that helps her improve it. 😦

Is it possible Jinyoung’s not a soprano? We haven’t really ever heard her sing save a few short clips, so we don’t really know what she can and can’t do as well. Unless you do know?

Lol yeah they’re fraternal twins, not identical. Obviously, this is only one song so I don’t expect you to rank her, but does Luna’s assertion that her sister has better technique than her seem true? She definitely seems to a rounder, more full voice, but I’ve read enough of your analyses to know that that doesn’t necessarily mean better.

No not necessarily but they’re not very different technically. Girl definitely got technique too.

Luna seemed to have a brighter mix from what I noticed? Do you think that’s a deliberate choice for this performance or maybe Jinyoung’s more used to making her voice bigger for classical singing?

It’s a safe assumption to say it’s because they’re trained differently.

This has been asked about. It’s Luna and her twin sister. The performance shows nothing new for Luna, they both strained above E5. Her sister produces resonance up to B4, at least.

Hi Ahmin! I know you’re a Luna fan so I thought you might be interested to know that she’s started a busking group with some of her music school friends. They have an instagram called u_m_z_c where they post little vids, and I think they plan on busking every Friday. I just thought I might be a good source of new singing material for her and enjoyable at the very least!

To follow up on this, her group just held a live busking event and a Twitter account is uploading videos of her singing various things (mostly stuff she’s sung before). It looks like they’re posting preview clips right now, with plans to upload the full stuff at some point (I think), but this is the account: https://twitter.com/LUNBUSIM
She apparently also sang a self-composed song. She doesn’t sound that different to me, but comparing some of it to when she first sang it, she sounds a little more relaxed (as far as tongue tension goes) but that might just be me not totally knowing what to listen for.

She actually sounded kind of tired to me, in a few of them. Her tongue tension is kind of an inconsistent thing anyway.

Oh and does the note being placed in the head make a drastic change to support? In mixed voice.
LikeLike
Wait who said she supported an A5 in mixed voice? She didn’t. A head placed note means at least that although support may not be present, the note isn’t being pushed from the throat fully and has some sort if attempt to place the sound correctly in the range they’re singing in. Namely an A5 in mixed voice is better executed if head placed, which minimizes the strain.
